Deutsche Telekom's €10.9 Billion Network Bet Faces a Crossroads in Court
09.06.2026 - 19:44:24 | boerse-global.deThe German telecom giant is walking a tightrope between a massive infrastructure push and a potentially disruptive legal battle over cable television contracts. While the company pours billions into fiber and 5G, the outcome of a constitutional court case could reshape its TV business for years.
Shares in the Bonn-based group have been drifting lower, trading at €27.74, roughly 19% below the 52-week high of €34.35 set last year. The stock has slipped about 4% over the past week and fallen through its 200-day moving average, a technical signal that has put investors on edge. For the year, the decline stands at over 17%.
The Karlsruhe Verdict That Hangs Over the Industry
Germany's Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe is currently weighing the legality of new termination rights for bulk cable TV contracts. The so-called Nebenkostenprivileg — a rule that allowed landlords to bundle TV fees into service charges — was abolished by lawmakers at the end of 2021. Since mid-2024, several smaller companies have challenged the associated right to terminate existing collective contracts, arguing it violates their freedom of occupation.
The financial stakes are real. Rival Vodafone has already lost 4 million TV subscribers as a result of the regulatory shift. One of the plaintiffs in the current case has put its own damage at nearly €9 million. A ruling is expected in the coming months and will determine planning certainty for the entire sector. Deutsche Telekom's own TV division faces the same headwinds, making its efforts to lock in customers with exclusive content all the more urgent.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
World Cup Rights and a Cybersecurity Deal
In a bid to fortify MagentaTV, Deutsche Telekom secured the broadcasting rights for 44 matches from the 2026 FIFA World Cup — all to be shown exclusively on its platform. The move is designed to boost subscriber numbers and stem defections triggered by the end of the bundled TV contracts.
Separately, the group has teamed up with Palo Alto Networks to launch a new cybersecurity service aimed at European businesses, expanding its software-focused revenue streams. The tariff agreement reached earlier this year has also brought operational calm, with analysts at Goldman Sachs maintaining a buy rating and a €40 price target.
€8.5 Billion Fiber Promise — With a Bureaucracy Bottleneck
The headline investment story, however, lies in the infrastructure pact signed by the federal government, state authorities, and the telecom industry. The sector is committing €8.5 billion to fiber-optic expansion this year and another €2.4 billion to mobile network upgrades. The goal is to connect 3.2 million households directly to fiber by the end of 2026, with the Federal Network Agency monitoring progress every six months.
Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The deal also includes a floor for 2027: at least €6.6 billion in network spending. Yet a major obstacle remains the glacial pace of permitting in Germany. Building a single mobile mast currently takes more than three years on average, and the states have pledged to speed up digital approval processes — a promise that will need to be delivered on if the investment targets are to be met.
Earnings and the Next Catalyst
Market expectations for the full year point to earnings per share of €2.21 and a dividend of €1.13. In the first quarter, revenue came in at €29.87 billion, up just 0.39% year-on-year, with EPS of €0.42. The next major update arrives on August 6, when management presents second-quarter results. That report will show whether the World Cup content strategy and the infrastructure push are translating into tangible numbers — or whether the legal cloud over cable TV continues to weigh.
