Deutsche Telekom shares are navigating a complex landscape of operational pressures and strategic opportunities as the company enters a pivotal second quarter. The stock, which closed last Friday at EUR 30.99, finds itself just below its 50-day moving average, a technical position influenced by a recent dividend payout and looming financial catalysts.

A significant headwind is forming at the domestic bargaining table. On Monday, April 13, the Bonn-based telecom giant entered wage negotiations with the ver.di union, a process set to run through four rounds until the end of May. The union is demanding a 6.6 percent pay increase over twelve months for approximately 60,000 employees, plus a one-time bonus of EUR 660 per member. A successful outcome for the union would materially impact the company's cost base, challenging its full-year target for adjusted EBITDA of EUR 47.4 billion.

Offsetting some of this pressure is an ongoing share buyback initiative. A second tranche of the program, worth up to EUR 550 million, is active until the end of June. Between early and mid-April alone, a commissioned bank purchased over 1.3 million shares via the Xetra exchange. This corporate action provides a technical cushion for the stock, which remains up a solid 11 percent year-to-date despite a recent pullback. The long-term 200-day moving average at EUR 29.59 is now seen as a key support level.

On the strategic front, the company's T-Systems unit has secured a landmark government contract. In partnership with SAP, it is developing the "Deutschland-App," a central citizen portal for digital government services. The Federal Ministry for Digital and State Modernization confirmed the partnership in early April, with T-Systems responsible for the critical infrastructure and data storage. Pilot tests are already underway in Hamburg, Dresden, and Nuremberg, with further administrative services slated for integration by the third quarter.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Concurrently, the Federal Network Agency has granted Deutsche Telekom regulatory relief in its fiber-optic business in Munich, Cologne, Ingolstadt, and Wolfsburg, citing advanced network rollout and decreased market shares in those areas.

Investor focus now sharpens on a series of imminent financial updates. The next major catalyst is the release of the group's first-quarter results on May 13. Analysts, on average, anticipate earnings per share of EUR 2.18, which would represent an 11 percent increase year-over-year. The company's full-year guidance also targets a free cash flow of roughly EUR 19.8 billion for 2026.

Prior to that, the market will scrutinize the Q1 earnings of its crucial US subsidiary, T-Mobile US, due on April 28. The performance of the American business is considered vital for the parent company's overall defensive strength, especially if a deteriorating geopolitical macro environment and rising oil prices weigh on broader markets.

Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The stock's recent weakness was partly attributed to the ex-dividend date adjustment for a record payout of EUR 1.00 per share, an 11 percent raise from the prior year. On that day, the share was the biggest loser in the DAX, falling over four percent. Whether the upcoming earnings can eclipse concerns over wage inflation and reaffirm the company's ambitious financial targets will likely dictate the stock's direction for the coming months.
