Investors in Deutsche Telekom are navigating a stark contrast between robust shareholder returns and growing anxiety over its most valuable asset. While the company presses ahead with a multi-billion euro share buyback and a record dividend, analyst jitters about its US subsidiary, T-Mobile US, are casting a shadow. All eyes are now on the quarterly report due May 13th for clarity.

The source of the market's unease is a recent move by JPMorgan, which trimmed its price target for Deutsche Telekom from €41.50 to €40.00. The bank maintained its "Overweight" rating but flagged heightened competition in the US mobile market, where AT&T is aggressively challenging rivals. This is a critical vulnerability for the German telecom giant, as T-Mobile US contributes over half of group revenue and boasts an EBITDA margin of approximately 38%. Any pressure on T-Mobile's profitability directly impacts the parent company's stock.

This concern is reflected in the share price performance, which has fallen about twelve percent over the last 30 days and trades below its 50-day average of €31.91. High real interest rates are also weighing on financing conditions, adding to the technical weakness.

Undeterred by the stock market's reaction, management continues to execute its capital return strategy. A dividend of €1.00 per share was paid on April 8th, marking an 11% increase year-over-year. Simultaneously, the company is actively buying back its own shares. Between April 2nd and 10th, it acquired around 1.32 million shares via Xetra at an average price of €30.94, spending nearly €41 million. This is part of the ongoing second tranche of its buyback program, which runs until the end of June with a volume of up to €550 million. For the full year 2026, total buybacks are planned to reach €2 billion, with over 12.3 million shares already repurchased.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

On the operational front in Germany, Deutsche Telekom is accelerating its fiber optic rollout while managing its legacy network. Construction for a new fiber network has officially begun in Halle (Saale), with communities like Kösching and Feldkirchen in Bavaria being connected. An information event for Armsheim is scheduled next. The group's goal is to provide a nationwide Fiber-to-the-Home network by the end of the decade, having already reached 12.6 million households with a target of at least 25 million by 2030.

A price increase for customers on older copper-based MagentaZuhause and Call & Surf contracts, effective April 1st, is explicitly designed to incentivize migration to this modern infrastructure. The company cited rising maintenance and energy costs for the copper network, which relies on more complex active components compared to passive fiber optics. The €2 monthly hike does not apply to fiber customers.

For the full year, Deutsche Telekom's targets remain firm. The group is aiming for adjusted EBITDA AL of around €47.4 billion—representing growth of about 7%—alongside a free cash flow of €19.8 billion and adjusted earnings per share of roughly €2.20.

Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The upcoming first-quarter results on May 13th will be pivotal. They will provide the first concrete data on how T-Mobile US is performing under intensified competitive pressure, revealing whether AT&T's aggressive pricing has already left a mark. The report will test whether the company's dual engine of German fiber expansion and generous capital returns can power through turbulence in its crucial American market.
