As smaller competitors run out of cash, Deutsche Telekom leverages its financial strength to repurchase shares and invest in fibre, AI-driven automation, and mobile upgrades.

Competitors that once flooded Germany with capital for fibre build-out are now running out of cash. Deutsche Telekom is capitalising on the retreat, pushing ahead with network expansion while simultaneously buying back its own shares at prices that have sunk to within a whisker of the year's low.

The broader telecom market is grinding higher this year. According to Bitkom, industry-wide revenue will reach €75.6 billion — growth of just 1.4 percent. Smaller players are struggling to add new customers, leaving the Bonn-based incumbent to act as the sector's anchor. Its financial heft allows it to continue investing while others pull back.

That investment includes a fresh round of buybacks. Between July 1 and 3, Deutsche Telekom repurchased 908,705 of its own shares through the Xetra electronic trading system, spending about €22.48 million. The programme, executed by a mandated bank, runs until the end of September and can cover up to 560 million euros' worth of stock, or a maximum of 23.5 million shares. The overall authorisation stretches to €2 billion through the end of 2026. Reducing the float in this way supports earnings per share — a clear signal to the market that management sees value at current levels.

That confidence is tested by the stock's trajectory. On Wednesday, the shares closed at €25.54, a fractional recovery from the year's low of €23.54 touched just days earlier. Since the start of 2025, the equity has lost 8.36 percent, and over the past twelve months the decline deepens to 17.88 percent. The 52-week high of €34.35, set on February 27, now stands 25.65 percent away. Volatility remains elevated at 29.48 percent.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Technical indicators paint a cautious picture. The price sits nearly eleven percent below its 200-day moving average, and the relative strength index at 41.6 points to weak momentum. A near-term bounce of 1.35 percent over the past week offers little comfort when set against a 30-day drop of 8.10 percent.

While the stock lags, Deutsche Telekom is modernising the infrastructure underpinning its operations. A project dubbed StratoWeave has been introduced into the LFN organisation — an open-source platform that uses artificial intelligence to automate large-scale transport networks. The aim is to reduce dependency on individual hardware vendors, with the software integrating smoothly into existing systems.

Physical network expansion continues as well. A new mobile mast is being built in the NĂĽrnberger Land district and is scheduled to go live in autumn 2026, alongside upgrades to roughly thirty existing sites in the region. Separately, the company is taking over a halted fibre project in the town of Nachrodt-Wiblingwerde, promising connections for about 2,000 homes and businesses, with construction to begin no later than October. Across the Atlantic, T?Mobile US, the group's American subsidiary, is preparing to shut down its 2G network on August 3, freeing up spectrum for 5G and future 6G services.

Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The next earnings report is set for August 6. Until then, the buyback programme remains the most visible gesture of management's faith in the asset. On the marketing front, Deutsche Telekom will livestream the Lollapalooza festival free of charge on July 18–19 via its MagentaTV platform — a move designed to lure new subscribers directly.

Geopolitical headwinds, notably tensions in the Middle East, continue to weigh on the broader DAX index. For now, Deutsche Telekom is betting that steady investment in both technology and shareholders will eventually turn the market's mood.
