Deutsche Telekom Wins EU Quantum Mandate as T-Mobile US Structure Dispute Persists
Published on 07/17/2026 at 18:52 | Redaktion boerse-global.deDeutsche Telekom entered the weekend with a fresh strategic win and a modest bounce in its stock, even as a rancorous debate over the future of its prized American subsidiary shows no signs of abating. The Bonn-based group was tapped to lead the European quantum communication project PETRUS2, a high-profile initiative that will see it spearhead a consortium including Airbus, Thales and SES in building a cross-border infrastructure for quantum communications under the EuroQCI umbrella.
Shares responded with a gain of 2.58% on Friday, closing at €27.39 after the previous session’s €26.70. Over the full week, the stock advanced 4.54%. Yet the longer-term picture remains sobering: the equity is down 2.41% since the start of 2026 and has shed 11.37% over the past twelve months. The current price still sits roughly 20% below the 52-week high of €34.35 reached in late February.
Buyback machine hums as insider signals confidence
Alongside the quantum news, Deutsche Telekom continued to fire on its share repurchase programme. In a mandatory disclosure, the company said it bought back 2,321,535 own shares between 6 and 10 July at a weighted average price of €25.5679. Those purchases fall under the third tranche of its 2026 buyback plan, which began on 1 July and authorises the acquisition of up to 23.5 million shares worth a maximum €560 million by 30 September. Board member Rodrigo Francisco Diehl added his own vote of confidence, purchasing shares worth roughly €73,000 in early July.
Analysts divided on T-Mobile US but broadly optimistic on parent
The structural question over Deutsche Telekom’s relationship with T?Mobile US remains the dominant overhang. Large shareholders have voiced opposition to a potential full merger via a new holding company, with Jens Ehrhardt of DJE Kapital and Martin Wirth of FPM among those pushing back. No official decision has been made.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Against that backdrop, analyst ratings are mixed. JPMorgan reiterated its “Overweight” stance, seeing upside potential of roughly 53% and pointing to the ongoing transformation at T?Mobile US as well as the share buybacks. UBS also kept a “Buy” rating with a €36.20 price target, calling the recent weakness overdone and citing a solid German core business and stable US trends. Citigroup raised its own price target ahead of the 6 August second-quarter results.
On the US side, however, Bernstein Research cut its price target for T?Mobile US from $245 to $220, though it maintained a “Market-Perform” rating, citing growing competition from Starlink in the broadband segment. T?Mobile US also announced a management reshuffle: Chris Sambar, formerly of AT&T, will take the newly created role of chief enterprise officer on 14 October.
Operating momentum in Germany and AI progress
Separately, Deutsche Telekom is advancing its artificial intelligence capabilities. A partnership with OpenAI for AI-powered customer service applications is moving from a pilot phase into production, according to media reports. Investors will be watching for an update on that front, along with the broader operational trends, when the group publishes its half-year figures on 6 August.
UBS analyst Polo Tang, who reaffirmed his “Buy” rating on 13 July, expects robust performance in the German domestic business and operational stability at T?Mobile US. The recent share price weakness, in his view, does not reflect the underlying strength of the group.
Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Yet headwinds remain. In late June, the planned split of US rival Comcast into two independent companies weighed on the entire telecom sector, dragging Deutsche Telekom along. And the fundamental scepticism in the US toward a holding structure — a risk flagged by analysts as early as spring — continues to colour sentiment.
The quantum project win gives Deutsche Telekom a compelling growth narrative in a cutting-edge field, but until the T?Mobile US structure debate is resolved, the stock may continue to trade below its full potential.
