EcoGraf projects 42% pre-tax IRR and $282M NPV for a 25,000-tonne graphite plant outside China, with sites in Asia, Europe, and US. Shares up 27%.

A projected 42% pre-tax internal rate of return and a net present value of $282 million underpin EcoGraf's case for building a 25,000-tonne-per-year graphite purification plant outside China. The Australian company's global site study, released in late May, evaluates seven potential locations across Asia, Europe, and the United States for its proprietary HFfree® cleaning technology, with total capital costs estimated at $95 million.

The financial projections rest on operating costs that range from $359 to $571 per tonne of spherical purified graphite (SPG), depending on local energy, labour, and infrastructure expenses. EcoGraf pegs the baseline average at $478 per tonne. For a U.S. site, the integrated supply-chain cost runs to roughly $1,441 per tonne. The variation stems largely from regional input prices, while raw-material costs from its Tanzanian deposits and mechanical shaping expenses remain constant across all options.

Flexibility as a Strategic Asset

Rather than committing to a single jurisdiction, EcoGraf is keeping its options open. Asian locations offer lower operating costs, while Europe and North America provide proximity to fast-growing battery manufacturing hubs. The company has already filed grant applications that could cover up to 60% of capital costs for plants in Europe and the United States. To date, it has secured or is at an advanced stage of applying for a combined €6.2 million (around A$10 million), including €2 million from the European Investment Bank and additional backing from initiatives such as DEG Impulse.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying EcoGraf Ltd?

Commercial partnership discussions are ongoing, though EcoGraf has not announced any binding agreements. The political tailwinds are strengthening: China, which controls roughly three-quarters of global natural graphite output, tightened export restrictions on dual-use goods to Japan in January, and a temporary window for lithium-ion battery exports is expected to close by November 2026. These moves are fuelling demand for transparent, China-free supply chains.

Growing Intellectual Property Base

In May 2026, India's patent office granted EcoGraf patent No. 587710 for the HFfree® technology, valid until May 2041. That development is strategically timed: India aims to expand its electric-vehicle battery capacity to 256 gigawatt-hours by 2032, creating a large new market for geopolitically independent graphite sources.

At the bourse, the stock has responded to the news flow. EcoGraf shares climbed 27% over the past seven trading sessions to close at €0.23 on Friday. That level nudges the 200-day moving average, though it remains roughly 39% below the 52-week high of €0.38 hit in October 2025. The relative strength index sits at 59.5, a neutral reading, and annualised volatility is just under 87%.

The site analysis alone will not secure construction. The next milestones hinge on finalising a location, advancing funding applications, and signing offtake agreements. With 42% IRR arithmetic and a growing patent portfolio, EcoGraf has built a data-backed pitch — but investors will be watching for concrete commitments in the months ahead.
