The transformation of Energy Fuels from a pure uranium miner into a vertically integrated rare earth powerhouse is gathering pace, backed by a substantial commitment from the US Department of Defense. The $725 million loan facility, announced alongside the company’s mid-year production update, is earmarked for building domestic supply chains for critical minerals — a push that dovetails with the January 2027 ban on Chinese magnets in US military applications under the National Defense Authorization Act. With the $1.9 billion acquisition of German magnet producer Vacuumschmelze (VAC) also moving forward, Energy Fuels is positioning itself as a linchpin of Western rare earth independence.

The VAC deal, structured as a mix of cash and shares, aims to create an end-to-end platform stretching from mining through to finished magnets. The Pentagon financing, though conditional on final terms, provides a powerful tailwind for the retooling of Energy Fuels’ White Mesa Mill in Utah, where industrial-scale rare earth separation is slated to begin by the end of 2027. The clock is ticking: construction work on the mill upgrades starts this month.

All this strategic activity, however, has not distracted from the core uranium business. Energy Fuels produced roughly 1.6 million pounds of uranium oxide through the end of June, placing the company comfortably within its full-year guidance range of 1.5 to 2.5 million pounds. The White Mesa Mill, with processing costs of $9 to $12 per pound, remains highly profitable at current spot uranium prices of around $85.85 per pound, even though the market has been trading sideways after the sharp rally earlier in the year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Energy Fuels?

Analysts remain divided on the stock’s near-term prospects. Roth Capital has trimmed its price target to $16 with a neutral rating, while Goldman Sachs lowered its target from $29 to $21 but maintained a constructive medium-term view — suggesting the market is waiting for the VAC integration and rare earth expansion to translate into tangible financial results. The company continues to post losses as it scales up across three segments simultaneously: uranium, rare earths, and heavy mineral sands.

That caution is reflected in the share price. Energy Fuels’ stock currently trades at €12.59 on the Xetra exchange, a decline of nearly 17% over the past month and roughly 12% year to date. The sell-off mirrors broader sector jitters, triggered in part by Cameco’s ongoing production halt at Cigar Lake following a sulphuric acid plant failure in Saskatchewan. That disruption, though likely temporary, has weighed on sentiment across the uranium mining space. Energy Fuels, with its US-based operations and self-reliant milling capacity, is somewhat insulated from such supply chain shocks — but has not been immune to the sector-wide retreat.

On the corporate front, Jeffrey L. Vigil has been appointed as the new chief financial officer, and the company has staked 29 new uranium claims around its Energy Queen Mine, expanding its land package there to more than 2,700 acres. These moves reinforce Energy Fuels’ commitment to maintaining a robust uranium pipeline even as the rare earth transformation takes centre stage.

With the White Mesa Mill upgrades beginning and VAC acquisition closing in, Energy Fuels is entering a defining phase. The company’s dual-track strategy — continuing to deliver profitable uranium production while building a rare earth magnet business with direct Pentagon backing — offers a clear narrative. The question is whether the market will start pricing in that future before the next set of quarterly results.
