Fire Door Training and State Funding Propel German Apprenticeship Growth Amid Skills Warnings

A Bertelsmann Foundation study projects the number of employed people without a vocational qualification in Germany will reach 4.57 million by 2025, up from 3.76 million in 2017. Yet against that trend, the country’s skilled trades sector—known as the Handwerk—is showing a counter-movement. In the first half of 2026, it recorded its fourth consecutive rise in apprenticeship contracts, with nearly 67,800 new trainees signing up, a 4.9 percent increase.
Handwerk President Jörg Dittrich attributes the rebound to improved earnings, the ongoing industrial downturn, and the pull of new technologies such as artificial intelligence. Despite the upbeat numbers, however, more than 20,000 positions remain unfilled. The economic toll is heavy: the Institute of the German Economy (IW) estimates that the skills shortage caused production losses of roughly €49 billion in 2024 alone.
To close the gap, investment in qualification—especially in safety-critical fields—is seen as essential. One such area is fire protection. Companies are legally required to keep fire doors and hold-open devices in working order, which means they need competent staff to carry out inspections. TÜV SÜD now offers a dedicated two-day seminar that combines theory and hands-on practice. Participants learn to perform functional tests and assess operational safety independently. The courses launched in spring 2026 at locations from Berlin to Munich, Hamburg to Cologne, with online options also available. The fee is €1,014 plus an €80 examination charge. Successful candidates receive a certificate from the TÜV SÜD Akademie, confirming their expertise under the relevant technical rules—a prerequisite for legally sound inspections in commercial and public buildings.

For those aiming higher, for example to become an industrial master craftsman, the state provides support through the Advancement Training Assistance Act (AFBG), commonly called Meister-BAföG. It covers half of course and exam costs as a non-repayable grant; the remainder is financed by a KfW loan. On passing the exam, another 50 percent of that loan is forgiven. To illustrate: on total costs of €10,000, the combination of grant and loan relief leaves a personal share of just €2,500. Some federal states add further master’s bonuses.
The push for better-qualified personnel in safety-critical trades dovetails with broader efforts to shore up the Handwerk’s workforce and keep the country’s economy running. As Dittrich noted, the skilled trades are proving resilient even as other sectors struggle.
