That disaster is now fuelling a push for better-trained operators across Germany. The Sächsische Bildungsgesellschaft für Umweltschutz und Chemieberufe Dresden, a Saxon training body, has scheduled a refresher course on 2 December 2026 specifically for current biogas operators who already hold a basic qualification and need to update their skills. Additional refresher dates are dotted through the year: 20 January, 17 February, 17 March, 13 May, 22 October and again 2 December. For newcomers, basic training sessions run on 18 February, 28 April, 24 September and 16 November 2026. All courses follow Germany's technical rules for hazardous substances — TRGS 529 — and for plant safety, known as TRAS 120.

Government Targets Rigid Inspection Deadlines

While the industry focuses on qualifications, the federal government is moving to cut bureaucratic burdens. On 15 July it announced plans to replace fixed inspection intervals for electrical systems with a risk-based approach — a shift that could give many companies more organisational flexibility. There is a catch: high-risk environments, such as wet rooms in the hospitality sector, will remain under the old strict regime. A formal bill has yet to be drafted.

Efficiency Push: Getting More Gas Out of Fibrous Waste

Safety is only half the story. The sector is also searching for ways to improve yields from difficult feedstocks. On 15 July, the Biogas Forum Bayern released updated technical information covering 15 different substrate pre-treatment methods. These range from physical techniques like extrusion and ultrasound through chemical processes to biological approaches using bacteria or enzymes. The aim is to break down fibre-rich materials more effectively before fermentation, boosting gas output.

When Switching to Biomethane Makes Sense

For operators of older plants, the big question is whether it still pays to feed purified biomethane directly into the gas grid rather than burning it on-site in a combined heat and power unit. At a technical briefing on 15 July, Georg Siegert of the Institut für Biogas, Kreislaufwirtschaft und Energie laid out clear criteria: the switch is only worthwhile if a gas-network connection lies within one kilometre and connection costs do not exceed €250,000. A high share of livestock manure in the feedstock improves the greenhouse-gas balance and lifts profitability. But planning takes at least three years.

On the hardware side, converting a biogas plant to biomethane injection requires specialised components. Side-channel compressors, for example, must meet specific requirements for flow rate, explosion protection according to ATEX zones, and handling of moisture — only then can the process run reliably and safely.
