Mental health conditions now lead workplace absenteeism in Germany, with a 9% rise in 2026. Experts urge flexible, chronotype-aware work models to combat social jetlag and heat strain.

Mental health conditions have overtaken respiratory infections as the leading cause of workplace absenteeism in Germany for the first time, according to fresh data from DAK-Gesundheit. The health insurer analyzed records from roughly 2.2 million members and found that psychologically related absences jumped nine percent in the first half of 2026, while respiratory illnesses dropped 21 percent. The overall sickness rate held steady at 53 cases per 1,000 employees, though the average duration of illness edged up to 9.7 days.

Austria’s own absenteeism report mirrors the pattern, showing a long-term rise in mental health-related sick leave. A separate PwC study found that 63 percent of employees now report higher psychological strain.

Chronobiologist Till Roenneberg argues that the problem is partly structural. Only 20 percent of people are natural “larks” who peak early in the day, he warns. The majority experience “social jetlag” — forced by fixed work hours to live against their internal body clock. The consequences extend beyond mood and productivity. Chronic disregard for circadian rhythms raises the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity. Researchers at MedUni Vienna have also identified genetic links to circadian disruption, connecting it to neuroticism and atypical caffeine consumption.

Workplace experts are now pushing for changes. One consultant recommends surveying employees’ chronotypes, then protecting “power hours” for focused work and setting clear communication norms. A concrete proposal: restrict meetings to the window between 10:00 and 15:00. A Norwegian company that moved all meetings to 10:00 saw employee satisfaction rise sharply.

Technology is reshaping work organization as well. A white paper from the Adecco Group argues that integrating artificial intelligence demands a new management discipline — coordinating hybrid teams of humans and AI agents. Between 2022 and 2025, 1.9 million new AI-related jobs were created. Yet large-scale adoption across European companies sits at only about 20 percent.

Heat is adding another layer of strain. DGB chairwoman Yasmin Fahimi is calling for a statutory heat-related compensation payment. High temperatures already weigh heavily on the economy, and a survey shows one in three workers feels impaired by heat on the job.

The broader lesson, observers say, is that modern workplace design must move away from rigid attendance rules — such as those debated at Airbus — toward flexible, life-stage-sensitive and biologically compatible models.
