Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG) is pushing the wonder material out of the lab and onto commercial building facades. The Australian company has secured a contract to coat between 300 and 600 air-conditioning units installed on two new luxury towers on the Gold Coast. The THERMAL-XR graphene layer is designed to protect the equipment from corrosion in Queensland's salty coastal air while simultaneously cutting energy consumption.

The deal marks a tangible commercial validation for GMG's graphene technology, which the company produces from natural gas using a proprietary process. While the Gold Coast project targets the building sector, the firm is simultaneously making strides in energy storage. Its graphene-aluminium-ion battery — capable of charging in just six minutes — saw its energy density double in April, positioning it as a challenger to conventional lithium-titanate-oxide batteries that command a multibillion-dollar market.

That dual-track strategy is now being amplified with a forceful push into the United States. GMG recently appeared on US television and launched Times Square advertising to court North American investors. The marketing blitz aims to broaden the shareholder base ahead of what the company hopes will be a commercial breakthrough. To support the ramp-up, GMG has hired a former Rio Tinto executive as Chief Production Growth Officer, tasked with transitioning from pilot plants to industrial-scale manufacturing.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Graphene Manufacturing Group?

Production capacity is the next critical milestone. GMG's new "Gen 2.0" facility in Queensland is on track to begin operations by the end of June, with an annual capacity of at least ten tonnes of graphene. Once that plant is running, the company plans to expand into North America, building additional factories to take advantage of lower natural gas prices. The manufacturing process avoids reliance on scarce raw materials such as lithium, copper or rare earths, sidestepping both supply-chain vulnerabilities and environmental concerns tied to conventional battery chemistries.

The market has taken notice of the operational progress. Shares jumped 10.5% in a single session to hit 1.60 EUR, extending a 270% rally over the past twelve months. The stock has however traded lower at other points; during the week of the US television appearance it stood at 1.47 EUR after a more modest 1.38% gain. The current price remains well below the 52-week high of 2.37 EUR, suggesting room for further upside if the company delivers on its production targets.

Investors will get a clearer picture on 31 May 2026, when GMG reports its next set of quarterly earnings. The update is expected to include detailed timelines for the international expansion, with particular attention on whether the Gen 2.0 plant starts production on schedule. For now, the twin signals coming out of the Gold Coast and the US market suggest that graphene is moving from promise toward practice.
