Graphite One's Alaska Mine Project Enters Decisive Public Hearing Phase

Graphite One faces key environmental hearings for its Alaska mine, a project critical to ending U.S. reliance on imported battery graphite and backed by a $5B feasibility study.

A critical week of public hearings in Alaska could shape the future of America's domestic battery supply chain. Graphite One Inc. is facing community scrutiny as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) holds a series of meetings to gather input on the environmental impact of its proposed Graphite Creek mine. The process, which began in Nome on April 13 and concludes in Brevig Mission on April 15, is a mandatory step for securing a Section 404 permit under the Clean Water Act.

The project's scale is significant, requiring the placement of fill material into approximately 400 acres of water resources within the Kigluaik Mountains. The local sensitivity is evident in the hearing format; while company management attended the session in Nome, the doors for the meetings in Teller and Brevig Mission were reserved exclusively for agency officials and local residents, a request made by tribal representatives.

This permitting milestone arrives as Graphite One's stock, trading around $0.90 USD, has gained over 31 percent in the last 30 days. Investors are tracking the progress of a project designed to attack a glaring strategic vulnerability: the United States is currently 100 percent reliant on imports for the graphite used in advanced batteries and defense applications.

To fund its near-term development work, the company secured approximately CAD $35 million through a share placement in February. These funds are earmarked for design, engineering, and equipment for a planned anode material manufacturing plant in Ohio. The broader corporate strategy is a vertically integrated "Alaska to Ohio" model, where mined graphite would be processed into battery-grade material for the U.S. electric vehicle market.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Graphite One?

The company has already signaled market interest through two non-binding supply agreements with Lucid Motors, one for synthetic graphite from July 2024 and another for natural graphite material from June 2025. The economic foundation was detailed in a 460-page feasibility study published in April 2025.

Recognizing the project's national significance, the federal government has placed Graphite Creek on its FAST-41 dashboard, a program intended to streamline permitting for critical infrastructure. The entire environmental review process under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is currently scheduled for completion by September 29, 2026.

A final permit decision is expected that same month. Should it be positive, Graphite One aims to begin construction in 2027. The company is concurrently preparing formal loan applications to the U.S. Export-Import Bank (EXIM) for potential financing of up to $2.07 billion, which would cover an estimated 70 percent of the project's capital costs. The feasibility study projects a net present value (NPV) of $5.03 billion and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 27 percent for the overall venture.

Graphite One at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Adding a near-term corporate dynamic, 583,015 Restricted Share Units (RSUs) granted to directors in April 2025 are vesting and converting into common shares this week, introducing a measure of dilution during this pivotal period for the company's regulatory efforts.
