Heidelberg Scores Boardmaster Order in Switzerland as Restructuring Costs Bite
Published on 07/10/2026 at 17:22 | Redaktion boerse-global.deHeidelberger Druckmaschinen has secured a marquee order for its Boardmaster inline flexographic press, but the new business has done little to shift the market’s focus from the heavy financial toll of the company’s ongoing overhaul. Swiss packaging firm Wintipak has commissioned the machine for the group’s Halle production site, yet the stock barely budged, closing at €1.39 on Thursday before slipping further to €1.36 by Friday.
The Boardmaster, capable of printing at speeds of up to 600 metres per minute and reducing start-up waste by as much as 90%, is equipped with an AI-driven system called Intellimatch that flags defects early and speeds up job changes without sacrificing quality. The deal underscores Heidelberg’s strategic bet on the packaging segment, where margins are fatter than in the structurally declining commercial printing market. The company is expanding capacity at Halle to accommodate rising demand from that sector.
That pivot, however, comes at a steep short-term cost. In July Heidelberg completed the acquisition of POLAR machines and systems, folding their production and development into its own operations, and simultaneously absorbed the lifecycle business of the manroland sheetfed group, including its global sales and service network. The moves bring in more than 3,000 additional customers and around 600 new employees, all aimed at boosting high-margin service revenues and reducing reliance on traditional equipment sales. Management has also set up a joint venture, ONBERG Autonomous Systems, as a second leg in security technology.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Heidelberger Druckmaschinen?
The price of this transformation: a net loss in the low double-digit million range for the 2026/2027 fiscal year. To shore up liquidity, banks have extended a €436 million syndicated credit facility early, pushing its maturity out to 2030. The market capitalisation currently stands at €417 million.
Investors remain unconvinced. The stock now trades at around €1.36, just 5.65% above the 52-week low of €1.29 recorded on 16 March 2026. From the 52-week high of €2.54 touched on 30 July 2025, the shares have fallen 46.15%. Year to date the decline stands at 32.76%. The 200-day moving average of €1.68 lies 18.75% above the current price, while the 50-day average of €1.44 is 3.38% higher. The relative strength index of 43.5 points to neutral territory, though the annualised 30-day volatility of 37.54% signals that sharp swings remain a risk.
Heidelberg will hold its virtual annual general meeting on 23 July 2026, where the board is expected to detail its cost-cutting programme and plans to shift some production to China. For now, the Wintipak order offers a glimmer of validation for the packaging strategy even as the restructuring drag continues to dominate the narrative.
