Heidelberger Druck's Shareholders Sign Off on a Painful Pivot as the Stock Tests New Lows
Published on 07/27/2026 at 17:52 | Redaktion boerse-global.deShareholders of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen have formally endorsed the company's radical makeover, but the market is pricing in the heavy cost of that transformation. At the annual general meeting on July 23, investors approved every management proposal — including a fourth consecutive year without a dividend — as the German industrial group pushes deeper into drone defense and sodium-ion battery storage.
The stock, which closed at €1.35 on the Friday before the AGM, has shed roughly 33% since the start of the year. It now trades at €1.36, barely above its 52-week low of €1.29. The gap to the 200-day moving average has widened to nearly 18%, underscoring a medium-term downtrend that shows no sign of reversing.
From Printing Presses to Power Storage
The centerpiece of the transformation is a partnership announced on July 21 with PHENOGY to build an industrial platform for sodium-ion battery storage. The technology is positioned as a cheaper, European-supply-chain-friendly alternative to lithium-ion systems — a strategic bet on energy independence that sits far from the company's printing-press roots.
Alongside that, the company's drone defense business is further along than many investors realized. The "Live Hub" in Brandenburg an der Havel, which began protecting critical infrastructure in April 2026, is already operational. The business is run through subsidiary HD Advanced Technologies and the joint venture Onberg Autonomous Systems, which signed a letter of intent with a Ukrainian partner at the ILA air show in June to industrialize counter-drone systems.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Heidelberger Druckmaschinen?
A Profitable Year, Yet No Payout
Despite posting a net profit of €15 million on stable revenue of €2.293 billion for the 2025/2026 financial year, management is hoarding cash. The board's message is clear: the restructuring consumes every available euro. For the current 2026/2027 fiscal year, the company expects a net loss in the low double-digit millions, driven by transformation costs, investments in new business lines, and the build-out of Chinese operations.
Shareholders did secure one piece of flexibility: a new authorization to buy back up to 10% of the company's share capital, valid until July 24, 2029. Whether management will use it remains an open question, contingent on the share price trajectory and internal cash generation.
Technical Pressure Mounts
The chart tells a story of persistent weakness. At €1.36, the stock sits 4.33% below its 50-day moving average of €1.42. Market observers warn that a break below the 52-week floor of €1.29 could trigger fresh selling pressure.
All eyes now turn to August 19, when Heidelberger Druck releases its first-quarter results for 2026/2027. The numbers will reveal whether cost-cutting in the core business and early revenue from drone defense and battery storage can offset the projected losses — or whether the transformation still has more pain in store.
