A junior explorer that has seen its market value evaporate by more than 95% is pinning its turnaround hopes on a new airborne survey. Highland Critical Minerals will launch a geophysical campaign from its Church lithium project in northwestern Ontario at the end of May, swapping traditional soil sampling for LiDAR and radiometric measurements.

The shift in strategy comes after field teams failed to detect meaningful lithium anomalies through conventional ground sampling. The company raised C$400,000 through a private placement to fund the work, issuing 1.6 million flow-through shares at C$0.25 apiece. These instruments carry tax advantages for Canadian investors.

Historical Hints of Lithium Potential

The Church property sits near the Georgia Lake project, which hosts roughly 10 million tonnes of rock grading 0.88% lithium. Historical rock samples from the Church area have returned lithium oxide concentrations as high as 1.18%, pointing to the presence of LCT pegmatites — formations that can host economically viable lithium deposits. The airborne survey aims to identify hidden structural targets beneath the surface.

A Streamlined Corporate Structure

Highland enters this exploration season with a leaner balance sheet. The company recently distributed the majority of its stake in Highland Red Lake Gold to shareholders, reducing its ownership from 73% to 17%. Director Brian Morales said the move sharpens the focus on two core assets: the Church lithium project in Ontario and the Sy gold project in Nunavut.

At Sy, historical grab samples have returned grades as high as 38.8 grams of gold per tonne, with mineralization traced along a 30-kilometer strike length. The company has documented more than 40 high-grade occurrences along this trend.

Market Skepticism Remains

Despite the restructuring and fresh capital, the market has yet to reward Highland's efforts. The stock trades roughly 82% below its 200-day moving average, a stark reminder of the steep decline from nearly C$6 to just a few cents. The upcoming geophysical work will provide the first hard field data since the corporate overhaul, forming the basis for any drilling decisions later this year.

For Highland Critical Minerals, the summer exploration program represents more than just a technical exercise — it is the first real test of whether the company's new direction can deliver the results that have so far eluded it.
