HSE Suspends Wexford Registration Office After Water Damage

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has temporarily closed the Civil Registration Service office at Ely Hospital in Ferrybank, Wexford, following water damage to the facility. The closure, announced on 17 July 2026, disrupts access to birth, death and marriage registration services for local residents, though broader hospital functions remain unaffected.
Day procedures and outpatient appointments at Ely Hospital are continuing as scheduled. The HSE has redirected those needing registration services to alternative offices in Enniscorthy, New Ross and Waterford. The executive reported notable improvements in waiting times. The primary care waiting list was reduced by 10,000 people, while the Children's Disability Network Team (CDNT) waiting list fell by 27% to 9,363. Digital services also saw growth, with the HSE's health app reaching 121,000 users. Other figures from the report include 25.5 million home support hours delivered and 8,911 residential disability places established.
Regional Pressures and Infrastructure Delays
The temporary office closure coincides with a period of heightened activity in Wexford's property market. As of 17 July, 205 Vacant Property Refurbishment Grants had been paid out in the county, totalling over €11 million. Housing commencements in Wexford reached 602 in the first half of 2026, already surpassing the 563 recorded for all of 2025.

The HSE has been criticised for a lack of urgency over a planned €8 million rehabilitation unit at Roscommon University Hospital, a project first promised in 2015. Separately, the Health Minister has said the contractor for the National Children's Hospital has a clear responsibility to ensure the facility meets standards, amid concerns that an August 31 handover date may be missed due to fire-safety compliance issues with bathroom pods.
