All eyes are on International Business Machines Corp. as it prepares to release its first-quarter results. The technology giant's stock, trading at €216.60, finds itself roughly 20% below its yearly peak, setting the stage for a pivotal market reassessment based on the hard numbers due tomorrow.

A significant cluster of institutional investors has been actively repositioning ahead of the report, though their moves paint a divided picture. Recent filings reveal that Zürcher Kantonalbank slashed its stake by half in the fourth quarter, leaving it with a holding worth approximately $83 million. In stark contrast, several other asset managers aggressively expanded their positions in the same period. NEOS Investment Management increased its holdings by 51.7% to 114,395 shares, while Smith Salley Wealth Management boosted its stake by 58.8% to 22,427 shares. Earned Wealth Advisors and Newbridge Financial Services Group also reported substantial builds of 354.6% and 30.0%, respectively.

The immediate technical picture shows a short-term positive trend, with shares gaining over six percent on a weekly basis. However, chart analysts at Charles Schwab point to a weakening upward momentum, noting the stock remains in a broader downtrend, trading about eight percent below its 200-day moving average.

Wall Street’s consensus remains firmly optimistic, maintaining a "Buy" rating. The average price target sits near $302, with firms like Wedbush advocating for $340. Evercore ISI recently added IBM to its "Tactical Outperform" list, with analyst Amit Daryanani anticipating results that could surpass current market estimates. He holds a $345 price target and suggests a potential upgrade to IBM's constant-currency growth forecast for 2026 could be the major catalyst following the earnings call. Jefferies also reiterates its "Buy" recommendation, though it trimmed its target from $370 to $320, citing favorable year-over-year comparisons likely to boost software performance.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IBM?

The software unit is under particular scrutiny, with Jefferies analysts projecting revenue growth exceeding eleven percent. This optimism is driven by the integration of Confluent assets and an expected ten percent growth from the Red Hat subsidiary. For the entire corporation, the market anticipates revenue growth of around seven percent, with free cash flow margin likely holding steady at 13 percent.

Beyond quarterly figures, two other critical developments are converging. The company is widely expected to announce its 26th consecutive annual dividend increase, with analysts forecasting a quarterly payout of $1.6875 per share, up from $1.68. Simultaneously, IBM recently settled a case with the U.S. Department of Justice for $17 million. The agreement, announced April 10, resolves allegations that the company violated the False Claims Act in federal contracting related to DEI hiring practices, with $8.2 million allocated for damages. This was the inaugural case under the DOJ's Civil Rights Fraud Initiative launched in 2025.

On the strategic front, CEO Arvind Krishna reaffirmed the company's direction in a recent interview. While artificial intelligence remains the primary growth engine, quantum computing is positioned as a complementary technology gaining importance. Krishna predicts quantum systems will achieve a tangible market breakthrough before the end of the decade. IBM's quantum network already includes more than 250 participating organizations.

IBM at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Insider trading activity in the last quarter showed net purchases of 1,484 shares, including a 1,000-share acquisition by Director David N. Farr at $304 per share. Institutional investors collectively hold about 59 percent of the outstanding stock. Tomorrow’s report will deliver the crucial data points on growth, profitability, and capital returns that the market now awaits.
