Infineon's €5 Billion Dresden Bet Tested as Sector Contagion Deepens

The contrast could hardly be starker. Infineon Technologies has just opened the most expensive factory in its history — a €5 billion smart power fab in Dresden — yet its shares are trading nearly 29% below the June peak, battered by a wave of selling that swept through European semiconductor stocks this week.
The trigger came from an unlikely source: strong numbers that weren't strong enough. STMicroelectronics posted a 26% revenue jump to $3.49 billion in the second quarter, but investors fixated on a full-year sales target that fell short of expectations. The stock plunged as much as 17% on the Paris bourse, its lowest level since mid-May, and the selling quickly infected the broader sector.
Infineon absorbed the heaviest blow among German chip names. On Thursday, the DAX-listed stock slid 3.6%, the worst performance in the index, after already trading more than 3% below the prior day's Xetra close on the Tradegate platform. The pain continued into Friday, with shares ending the session at €63.80, down another 2.22%.
The selloff wasn't confined to Infineon. BE Semiconductor and Melexis also fell, while MDAX-listed Süss Microtec dropped 2%. Adding to the pressure, Texas Instruments — which serves overlapping end markets in automotive and industrial electronics — lost nearly 6% in pre-market trading despite raising its own guidance.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?
Technical Warnings Flash as Support Levels Approach
The chart has turned decisively bearish in recent weeks. Infineon's share price now sits 15.4% below its 50-day moving average of €75.42, a gap that underscores how abruptly the short-term trend has reversed. The Relative Strength Index stands at 38.5, inching toward the oversold threshold of 30 that some traders interpret as a potential bottoming signal.
The €60 mark has emerged as the critical line in the sand. A break below that level would open the door to further downside, according to technical analysts. From the 52-week high of €89.67 set on June 3, the stock has already surrendered 28.85% of its value.
Yet for all the recent carnage, the longer-term picture remains remarkably strong. Despite the pullback, Infineon shares still show a 69.1% gain from the levels seen in early 2026 — a reminder of just how far the stock had run before profit-taking set in.
The Dresden Bet and the AI Pivot
The short-term noise obscures what management hopes will be a transformative strategic shift. On July 3, Infineon formally inaugurated its Smart Power Fab in Dresden, the single largest investment in company history at roughly €5 billion. The facility is designed to expand capacity for power semiconductors and analog/mixed-signal technologies, products that sit at the heart of the energy transition and industrial electrification.
Alongside the factory build-out, Infineon is positioning itself to capture a slice of the booming demand for efficient power management in AI data centers. The company sees this as a key growth vector for the medium term, though it remains to be seen how quickly those revenues materialize.

What Comes Next
For the immediate future, Infineon's fate is tied to forces largely outside its control. The coming week brings quarterly results from major US technology companies, and investors will be parsing those reports for clues about capital spending on cloud infrastructure and demand signals from the automotive sector.
Infineon itself reports fiscal third-quarter results on August 5. Until then, the stock is likely to remain volatile as the market searches for a new equilibrium after the sector-wide correction. A glimmer of hope came from STMicro's forecast of accelerating revenue growth in the final quarter, driven by rising orders for chips used in satellites and data centers. Whether that AI-driven tailwind reaches Infineon is the question that will define the next chapter for the stock.
