Intuitive Surgical Delivers Q2 Beat, but the Market Wants More Than Just Strong Numbers
Published on 07/20/2026 at 03:33 | Redaktion boerse-global.deA beat on revenue, a beat on earnings, and a sell-off that wiped more than 14% off the share price in a single session. Intuitive Surgical's second-quarter 2026 report triggered one of the sharpest single-day declines in the robotic surgery company's recent history, pushing the stock to a fresh 52-week low of €302.00. The paradox reflects a market that had already priced in strong results and was looking for something the company refused to give: an upgraded full-year forecast.
For the three months ended June, Intuitive Surgical posted revenue of $2.89 billion, a 19% year-over-year jump that comfortably exceeded the $2.82 billion analysts had penciled in. Adjusted earnings per share landed at $2.80, compared with consensus expectations of $2.51. GAAP net income reached $818 million, supported by an operating margin of 33.6%. A one-time tax benefit tied to retroactive tariff refunds added $28 million after tax, or $0.08 per share, to the bottom line.
The real trouble started when management refused to lift its 2026 guidance for da Vinci procedure growth, leaving the range unchanged at 13.5% to 15.5% with an expected midpoint near 14.5%. Investors who had hoped for an upgrade after the strong quarter were left disappointed. The company's cash position remains formidable — over $8.6 billion in cash, equivalents, and investments with zero long-term debt — but that financial fortress offered no defense against the disappointment over the outlook.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Intuitive Surgical?
Two geographic headwinds compounded the frustration. In the U.S., procedure growth slowed to roughly 12%, the weakest pace since the pandemic-era years of 2020 and 2021. CEO Dave Rosa attributed the deceleration to deferrable surgical procedures, noting that shifting insurance conditions and premium structures — including the expiration of enhanced ACA subsidy payments — are influencing when patients choose to undergo treatment. In China, the challenges are structural: rising domestic competition, state-directed pricing pressure, and a slowdown in tender activity are all weighing on the business. Rosa pointed to ongoing regulatory adjustments tied to reimbursement codes and procurement quotas under China's 15th Five-Year Plan.
Yet beneath the market's harsh reaction lies a business that continues to gain traction. Of the 468 da Vinci systems installed during the quarter, 246 were the new da Vinci 5 model, up from 180 in the same period last year. The installed base of all systems grew 12% to 11,710 units worldwide. Management noted that hospitals are using the da Vinci 5 more intensively than its predecessor, the Xi, citing integrated force-feedback and digital features as key drivers. Total procedure volume rose 16% year-over-year, underscoring the secular shift toward robotic surgery.
Wall Street analysts responded by trimming price targets, though most maintained their bullish ratings. Stifel cut its target from $670 to $550, citing concerns about margin pressure from elevated technology investments. Evercore ISI lowered its target from $430 to $375 while keeping an "In-Line" rating, and BTIG reduced its target to $469 but retained a Buy recommendation. Baird, JPMorgan, Piper Sandler, and Oppenheimer also issued downward revisions, though the consensus view remains that the sell-off is more about inflated expectations than a fundamental breakdown in the growth story.
Technically, the damage is severe. Shares now trade below the 50-day moving average of €360.34, the 100-day average of €382.71, and the 200-day average of €419.66. The relative strength index stands at 29.9, deep in oversold territory. For the first time in years, the stock has broken below its 200-week moving average — a level that had historically provided reliable support. With an annualized 30-day volatility of 54.28%, the stock is likely to remain a choppy trade in the near term. But a balance sheet that includes over $8.6 billion in liquid assets and no long-term debt gives the company plenty of room to ride out the current turbulence.
