IREN shares managed a modest rebound on Monday, climbing 3.49% to €30.38, but the reprieve does little to mask a brutal month that has wiped out more than 40% of the stock’s value. Over the past 30 trading days the equity has shed 40.09%, and it now trades roughly a third below its 50-day moving average of €45.01 — a gap of 32.51% that underlines the severity of the sell-off from the autumn high. The Friday prior to the bounce saw the stock close at €29.35, capping a daily loss of 3.58% and extending the 30-day decline to 42.11% by that measure. From the November peak of €68.61, the shares are down a staggering 57.22%.

The rout has dragged IREN into a wider technology maelstrom. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has entered a technical bear market, dropping more than 20% from its June high, while names such as Nvidia, TSMC and AMD all slumped on July 17 amid fears of Chinese competition from the Kimi K3 AI model by Moonshot AI and an escalating US-Iran conflict that pushed oil above $90. The damage has been indiscriminate across the AI infrastructure space: Core Scientific plunged 26%, TeraWulf lost 36%, and Applied Digital cratered 43%. IREN’s slide is therefore part of a sector-wide re-rating of AI-focused data center operators.

Compounding the macro headwinds, IREN’s own quarterly report landed with a thud. The company reported a net loss of $247.8 million for its fiscal third quarter, while revenue of $144.79 million missed the consensus estimate of $219.69 million by roughly 34%. Earnings per share came in at -$0.25 against an expected -$0.22. The numbers paint a clear picture: operating execution has fallen short of analyst expectations at a time when the market is demanding proof of profitability rather than promises of future scale.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

Yet IREN is not without powerful anchors. The company has a $3.4 billion contract with Nvidia for Blackwell GPUs to power its AI cloud business, and it holds a cash pile of $2.6 billion — a war chest that offers a cushion few peers can match. The bull case rests on that contract, a 5-gigawatt data center pipeline, and a target of $3.7 billion in annualized recurring revenue by the end of 2026, backed by the rollout of 150,000 GPUs. Analysts remain broadly constructive: 14 rate the stock a buy, three a hold, and two a sell, producing a “Moderate Buy” consensus with an average price target of $82.36 — more than 160% above current levels.

That optimism, however, is being tested by a governance firestorm. The board awarded co-CEOs William and Daniel Roberts more than 18 million restricted stock units, a package worth roughly $800 million at recent prices. Prominent short seller Jim Chanos has flagged the dilution risk, arguing the award will consume a significant portion of future net profits precisely when every dollar is needed for capital-intensive expansion. The short interest has climbed to 21.27% of outstanding shares, signaling that a large swath of the market expects further downside.

Adding to the pressure, Meta’s announcement of its own “Meta Compute” initiative to sell excess data center capacity has rattled the entire neocloud sector, introducing a well-capitalized rival into the same market IREN is trying to capture. The company has moved to professionalize its leadership, adding a security chief and product and development chiefs in the first two weeks of July, but that organizational upgrade has done little to distract from the dilution question.

On a technical basis, the relative strength index now stands at 30, indicating deeply oversold conditions. The market capitalization remains at €10.5 billion, suggesting investors are pricing in a painful revaluation rather than a total collapse. The next major catalyst will be the earnings report scheduled for August 27, 2026, which will reveal whether IREN can convert its Nvidia partnership and massive pipeline into cash flow that justifies the multiple. Until then, the stock is caught between a bullish analyst community betting on the AI infrastructure narrative and a skeptical short contingent focused on governance and execution risk.
