A team of Italian scientists has developed a digital workflow that reduces the weight of prosthetic sockets by roughly 25 percent, producing a prototype from Polyamid 12 that weighed just 373 grams while maintaining high structural strength.

Similar lattice-structure approaches are now being applied to seating and positioning systems: new wheelchair cushions use 3D-printed grids with variable density to improve pressure relief and breathability. Packaging machinery specialist Syntegon has developed automated tray-loading systems for vials and cartridges that reach throughputs of up to 24,000 vials per hour (model GLT) and 36,000 cartridges per hour (model TLU-C). The company says the goal is not just speed but gentle product handling and full traceability.

A key side benefit: automation reduces the physical toll of repetitive motion tasks. Digital assistance tools are also entering the picture. Gerresheimer Doubles Asian Capacity with New Chinese Plant

Pharmaceutical packaging supplier Gerresheimer has opened a new facility in Zhenjiang Dagang, China, spanning 40,000 square meters and including a 2,700-square-meter ISO 8 cleanroom. The plant doubles the company’s production capacity in the region and currently employs 250 workers.

The building, certified to LEED Gold standards, also houses an ISO 7 laboratory. Gerresheimer said the expansion responds to rising demand for primary pharmaceutical packaging across Asia.

Hamburg Site Prepares for Advanced Cell and Gene Therapies

In Germany, PROVIREX has established a 230-square-meter S3 GMP cleanroom production area for Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs), including CAR-T cells, at its tecHHub site in Hamburg. The facility covers cleanroom classes A through D and can accommodate up to seven automated platforms.

GMP certification is still underway. Once completed, the company will be able to fully use the capacity for manufacturing cell and gene therapies.

INNEXIS Holding plans to acquire the Life Science Campus in Kundl, Austria, from Novartis at the turn of 2027. The site covers more than 260,000 square meters and includes over 100 buildings. Novartis will continue its core research and production activities in existing facilities on the campus.
