Kontron's Düsseldorf 5G Line Wins First European Auto Client as Ennoconn Vote Draws Near

Kontron has secured a debut order for 5G automotive modules from a major European carmaker, marking the first time the technology will be embedded in a European manufacturer's vehicle platform. The modules, developed in Berlin and produced at a new Düsseldorf facility that only started operations on July 13, 2026, are set to ship in initial volumes of roughly 150,000 units, with a value in the double-digit millions. The Austrian IoT specialist said the deal could more than triple in scale if the customer rolls the connectivity solution out to additional vehicle architectures.
The contract carries both commercial and geopolitical weight. Kontron positions itself as the only supplier worldwide that both designs and manufactures 5G communication modules entirely within Europe, arguing that the setup strengthens cybersecurity and supply chain resilience at a time when non-European players dominate the market. The Düsseldorf plant's official inauguration earlier this month was attended by federal and state officials, underscoring the political backing for domestic production of critical telecom components.
The automotive win follows on the heels of another large contract. Mid-July, Kontron's transportation subsidiary landed a roughly €100 million rail communications order covering the modernisation and maintenance of European train networks. Analysts at mwb research responded by lifting their price target on Kontron to €35.00, citing the strong order pipeline and the long-term revenue visibility provided by the rail business, which stretches well into the next decade.

Shareholder vote looms as institutions shuffle stakes
All of this is unfolding six days before a crucial shareholder vote on the mandatory takeover offer from Taiwan's Ennoconn Corporation, which values Kontron at €23.50 per share. The board continues to reject that price as too low, pointing to the fresh contract wins as evidence of higher intrinsic worth.
Institutional investors are repositioning ahead of the ballot. Goldman Sachs disclosed on Monday evening that it now holds 5.13% of voting rights, crossing the 5% notification threshold for the first time. The bulk of that position is held through securities lending and swaps, with only a small portion in directly held shares. Two other big names have also adjusted their exposures in recent days: Morgan Stanley stands at 6.96% and BlackRock at 4.07%.
Kontron's shares traded at around €23.00 on Tuesday, marginally above the €23.50 offer but roughly 20% below the 52-week high of €28.66. The stock has declined 17.66% over the past twelve months, and the relative strength index of 44.3 points to neither an overbought nor oversold condition. The narrow gap between the market price and the bid reflects the wait-and-see stance of many investors until the July 27 outcome is known. The board's campaign, backed by an independent fairness opinion and a growing order book, puts the spotlight squarely on how the big holders—Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and BlackRock—will vote.
