LPKF Laser: Record Order Momentum Fails to Mask Earnings Gap as UBS Boosts Holdings

The gap between LPKF Laser’s exploding order pipeline and its shrinking bottom line has never been wider. While the stock has rocketed 293% since the start of the year to €23.60, the first-quarter numbers tell a far more sobering story: revenue slumped by roughly a third to €17.1 million and the EBIT deficit widened to €6.9 million. The culprit, management says, is a weak solar business that continues to drag on the group.
Against this operational headwind, the order book offers a counterpoint. Incoming orders jumped to €24.1 million from €20.5 million a year earlier, yielding a book-to-bill ratio of 1.4. For every euro of revenue LPKF generated, it booked €1.40 in new mandates. That forward-looking dynamic appears to be driving the rally, not the current earnings. The company also reports progress in advanced packaging for semiconductors and steady execution on its North Star restructuring programme.
Institutional interest is quietly building. The UBS Group AG, a Swiss banking heavyweight, has raised its stake in LPKF to 3.23% of voting rights, a move disclosed after a purchase on 11 June. The position now sits just above the mandatory reporting threshold. UBS’s increased exposure comes amid extreme volatility: the stock’s 30-day annualised volatility stands at 139%, and the price currently trades 140% above its 200-day moving average.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying LPKF Laser?
Analysts remain wary of the valuation gap. Montega, which rates the stock a “hold”, lifted its target to €15.00 in early May — still far below the current market price. They point to geopolitical tensions and fierce price pressure from Chinese competitors as persistent headwinds for the sector. The RSI reading of 55.7 suggests the shares are not technically overbought, but at more than double the 200-day line, the risk of a sharp correction is ever-present.
The next few weeks offer two key tests. CEO Klaus Fiedler is scheduled to address retail investors at the SdK Anleger Forum, where questions can be submitted anonymously via chat. Later in the quarter, the six-month financial report will reveal whether the swelling order book can be converted into genuine revenue growth. If conversion accelerates, the re-rating gains fundamental support; if not, a volatility-driven pullback could be swift.
For now, the order traction and the UBS signal keep the bulls in charge. But with fundamentals still bleeding red, the rally hangs on execution — and the calendar.
