Lynas Rare Earths is demonstrating that building a supply chain independent of China can be both strategically vital and highly profitable. The Australian miner's latest financial results reveal a staggering leap, with net profit for the first half of 2026 soaring to A$80.2 million from just A$5.9 million a year earlier. Revenue climbed to A$413.7 million, underpinned by the company's unique position as the only significant producer of separated rare earths outside Chinese borders.

This financial muscle is funding an aggressive expansion of its downstream processing capabilities. A new milestone was recently achieved at its Malaysian plant in Gebeng, where production of samarium oxide commenced weeks ahead of schedule. Originally targeted for April 2026, this achievement marks the third heavy rare earth product Lynas can now separate, following dysprosium and terbium which came online last summer. Samarium is a critical material for high-performance magnets used in aerospace, medical technology, and electronics.

The company's growth strategy extends beyond Malaysia. In a joint venture with South Korea's LS Eco Energy, Lynas is investing A$30 million to construct a metal processing facility in Vietnam. Scheduled for operation in the fourth quarter of 2026, this plant will convert rare earth oxides into metals, a crucial final step before magnet manufacturing. This move directly extends Lynas's integrated value chain, which runs from its Mt Weld mine in Western Australia through separation in Malaysia and now to metal production in Vietnam.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lynas Rare Earths?

Geopolitical tensions continue to fuel demand for Lynas's output. China's control over approximately 98% of the global refining capacity for heavy rare earths, coupled with export restrictions imposed in 2025, has sent Western governments and defense contractors scrambling for secure alternatives. Lynas has secured its footing with long-term offtake agreements. Japan's JARE is committed to purchasing at least 50% of the heavy rare earths produced in Malaysia, with price floors for key materials like neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr). Separately, the U.S. Department of Defense awarded Lynas a $96 million, four-year supply contract for both light and heavy rare earths, also featuring NdPr price guarantees.

Regulatory support has solidified its operational base. In March, the Malaysian government renewed the operating license for the Gebeng facility for a further ten years, removing a key uncertainty.

Financially robust following a recent capital raise, Lynas holds cash reserves of approximately A$1.03 billion. The market has rewarded its progress, with the stock gaining over 206% year-on-year and closing at €13.20 last Friday. Its market capitalization stood at around A$19.5 billion in early April 2026. Analysts are now watching for the execution of key milestones, including the Vietnam plant start-up and the target for the Malaysian refinery to achieve full extraction capability for all demanded heavy rare earths by the end of 2027.

By focusing solely on strategic long-term customers and avoiding spot market sales, Lynas has carved out a defensible niche. The company now supplies an estimated 10% of the global market, with its "Towards 2030" strategy aiming for a significant expansion of processing capacity by the decade's end.
