Medtronic has sealed the $550 million acquisition of Scientia Vascular, a private developer of guidewires and catheters designed for navigating complex brain anatomy. The deal bolsters the medical device giant’s neurovascular portfolio, adding tools to simplify procedures for stroke and aneurysm treatment. Linnea Burman, head of Medtronic’s neurovascular business, described the move as creating an integrated platform that will improve care for patients with neurological conditions. The purchase price includes potential milestone payments, though their size has not been disclosed.

The acquisition is the latest in a series of targeted takeovers. Earlier this year, Medtronic bought CathWorks for up to $585 million and SPR Therapeutics for around $650 million. Management has signaled its appetite for larger deals, aiming for transactions in the $1-3 billion range. These purchases rest on a solid financial base: Medtronic posted revenue of over $36 billion in its last fiscal year, with the fourth quarter delivering nearly 10% growth. The company continues to target earnings per share around $6.

Financially, the Scientia deal is expected to be slightly dilutive to adjusted earnings per share in fiscal 2027 before turning accretive the following year. The integration of Scientia’s guidewires and catheters into Medtronic’s existing offerings for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke care aims to create a seamless workflow for physicians. For shareholders, the success of this strategy hinges on how quickly the new products gain market share without eroding margins.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Medtronic?

On the stock market, Medtronic’s shares have been sluggish. They currently trade at around €69.80, roughly 11% above the year’s low from early June, but remain down nearly 15% year-to-date. The price sits well below the 200-day moving average of €79.09, reflecting a persistent bearish trend. The Scientia acquisition alone is unlikely to reverse that sentiment; investors will be watching for measurable growth signals from the neurovascular segment in the next quarterly report.

The risk is clear: if Medtronic fails to integrate these technologies seamlessly and drive revenue quickly, the billions spent on recent acquisitions could fail to lift the stock. For now, the company’s M&A offensive represents a calculated bet on niche, high-growth areas within medical technology.
