Mental Health Drives 184 Sick Days per 100 Insured as Germany Rethinks Workplace Fitness

A quiet shift is reshaping Germany’s workplace health landscape: while high-tech wearables from Samsung and Garmin promise to track every heartbeat and breath, it is the stark rise in mental-health-related absences that is commanding attention. New data from DAK-Gesundheit for the first half of 2026 shows that psychological disorders have become the leading cause of work incapacity, with 184 sick days recorded per 100 insured individuals — a 9 percent jump from the previous year.

The overall sick rate edged down slightly to 5.3 percent, but the composition of illness has changed dramatically. Respiratory diseases, once the dominant driver of missed work, have fallen sharply. Wearables Enter the Health Arena

Samsung is betting on artificial intelligence to address some of these concerns. Breath-Based Analysis and Simple Strength Tests

An ETH Zurich spin-off is pioneering a novel method for measuring fat metabolism. Its wearable device, marketed as Nutrion, analyzes acetone concentration in exhaled breath. A study published in the journal Device found strong agreement with clinical mass spectrometers. Results appear within about 90 seconds, and acetone levels rise significantly after exercise or a high-fat meal.

Policy Changes on the Horizon
