MercadoLibre's Growth Surge Comes at a Cost as Profits Slide

08.05.2026 - 15:51:01 | boerse-global.de

MercadoLibre's Q1 revenue jumps 49% to $8.8B, beating estimates, but net income falls 16% as aggressive spending on logistics and fintech spooks investors.

The numbers at MercadoLibre tell two very different stories, and investors are clearly siding with one over the other.

Latin America's dominant e-commerce and fintech powerhouse posted a staggering 49% jump in revenue for the first quarter of 2026, hitting $8.8 billion — its fastest expansion since the second quarter of 2022 and comfortably ahead of Wall Street's forecasts. Yet the stock took an 8% hit in after-hours trading on Thursday, with shares sliding to around €1,467 in Friday's session, more than 36% below their 52-week peak.

The culprit? A sharp deterioration in profitability that has analysts and shareholders questioning the cost of the company's aggressive land-grab.

Net income fell roughly 16% year-over-year to $417 million, compressing the net margin to just 4.7%. Operating margins nearly halved to 6.9%. For a company accustomed to being rewarded for its top-line fireworks, the market's response was swift and unforgiving.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying MercadoLibre?

Investing Through the Pain

This isn't a case of unexpected cost overruns — it's deliberate strategy. Chief Financial Officer Martín de los Santos has been clear that management is consciously sacrificing short-term earnings to capture market share across Latin America.

The spending spree spans multiple fronts. MercadoLibre has slashed the threshold for free shipping in Brazil, its largest market, driving a 32% surge in active buyers there. The logistics network now encompasses more than 50 fulfillment centers, with 76% of express deliveries arriving within 48 hours. And the company has rolled out an AI-powered search engine across the region built on large language models.

The results of this investment blitz are evident in the operating metrics. Gross merchandise volume on the marketplace climbed 42% to $19 billion, while units sold jumped 47% to 721.7 million items.

Fintech Emerges as a Powerhouse

Mercado Pago, the group's financial services arm, is increasingly carrying the weight of the growth story. Revenue from the payments business surged 51% to $4.0 billion, with monthly active users swelling to 83 million. The total assets under management are approaching $20 billion.

The credit business is expanding at breakneck speed. The loan portfolio ballooned 87% to $14.6 billion — the largest nominal quarterly increase in company history. Credit card receivables more than doubled, rising 104% to $6.6 billion, as MercadoLibre issued 2.7 million new cards during the quarter alone.

Advertising revenue, another high-margin stream, grew 73% year-over-year, providing some offset to the margin pressure from logistics and credit.

MercadoLibre at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Analysts Trim Expectations

The market's punishment has been severe. The stock has lost nearly 13% since the start of 2026, and the post-earnings selloff prompted several analysts to revise their price targets. Scotiabank cut its target from $3,500 to $2,800, though it maintained a positive rating. UBS and Jefferies kept their neutral-to-buy stances, acknowledging the long-term logic behind the near-term pain.

The share price at German exchanges closed at €1,594.20 on Thursday before the earnings release, meaning the subsequent decline has deepened the year-to-date losses.

Management has offered no signal that profitability will rebound in the coming quarters. As long as the investment offensive in logistics, credit cards, and AI infrastructure continues, margin compression will remain the price of growth — and the central question for investors will be when that equation finally flips.
