Meta Halts Employee Mouse Tracking After 2,000 Sign Protest Over Data Spill

A security lapse at Meta has exposed private conversations, performance metrics, and AI prompts to the entire workforce, forcing the company to suspend a year-old program that recorded keyboard and mouse activity. The incident, which employees flagged as a SEV 2 — the second-highest severity internal event — came to light after screenshots showed the breadth of data that had become company-wide visible.
The Mouse and Keyboard Tracking (MCI) program had been running since April 2026, collecting interaction patterns for AI training. What no one anticipated was a configuration error that made private chats, transcriptions, entered prompts, and even performance scores accessible to every staffer. Meta insists there is no evidence of external access. Still, the company launched a full investigation after the initial technical fix failed.
Behind the scenes, resistance had been building for months. Roughly 2,000 employees signed a petition opposing the surveillance measures, with some describing the office atmosphere as authoritarian. That internal pressure intensified after the data exposure.
Signals of strain have also come from the top. CTO Andrew Bosworth acknowledged that morale has plunged sharply. CPO Chris Cox called the working environment extremely stressful. Those admissions add to the growing pressure on CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The MCI program remains paused indefinitely while Meta reviews its data-protection mechanisms. Originally designed to capture interaction patterns for AI development, the tool is now the subject of an internal probe into how sensitive information became available to the entire company despite existing policies. Whether — and in what form — the program will return is still unclear. Industry observers see the episode as a setback for Meta’s internal AI research efforts.
