The arithmetic behind Metaplanet’s numbers is brutal. Japan’s self-styled “Bitcoin-first” company posted a record quarterly revenue jump of 251% to $19.5 million in the first quarter of its fiscal 2026, while operating profit soared 282% to $14.4 million. Yet none of that mattered to investors who focused on the $725 million net loss — a torrent of red ink driven by a 24% plunge in bitcoin’s price from around $87,000 to roughly $66,000. The unrealized losses on its swelling crypto holdings buried everything else.

Shares of the Tokyo-listed company fell 5.67% on Tuesday to €1.25, leaving them 87.6% below the 52-week high of €10.05. The stock has now been ejected from the S&P Japan Mid Cap 100 index, a move that became official this week and underscores the scale of the sell-off. Year to date, Metaplanet has shed about 41% of its value, trading dangerously close to its 52-week trough of €1.20. The relative strength index has hovered around 35 to 40, signalling that the stock is approaching oversold territory without yet sparking a reversal.

CEO Simon Gerovich acknowledged the pain of the market turbulence in a statement, while confirming a delay in the proposed preferred share placement. Yet the company has not deviated from its bitcoin accumulation strategy. During the quarter, Metaplanet added 5,075 BTC to its hoard, bringing its total to 40,177 coins — enough to rank third among publicly traded bitcoin holders globally. The buying spree has been fuelled by debt: the firm has drawn $302 million from a $500 million credit line, leaving its equity base at $2.6 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?

Despite the relentless accumulation, the pace of new purchases has cooled in recent weeks. Metaplanet has not bought a single bitcoin for nine consecutive sessions, even as peers such as Strategy snapped up 520 BTC for $35 million and Strive Inc made aggressive moves in June. Instead, management is pivoting toward integration of the newly acquired Siiibo Securities, a broker-dealer that Metaplanet intends to use as a platform for developing bitcoin-linked financial products.

In an unusual bid to retain restless shareholders, the group has teamed up with the exchange Coincheck to launch a loyalty-reward programme. Investors who hold at least 100 shares by the end of June will be entered into a lottery to win bitcoin directly deposited into their accounts, with a top prize of 100,000 yen worth of the cryptocurrency. The initiative marks a departure from purely passive holding and attempts to turn the equity base into a distribution channel for digital assets.

Looking ahead, Metaplanet expects full-year fiscal 2026 revenue of roughly $101 million and operating profit of about $72 million — figures that management says demonstrate the underlying health of the core business. The message is that the real-economy operations will eventually compensate for the volatility of the bitcoin bet. Whether that materialises depends entirely on the cryptocurrency market.

A potential catalyst may come from outside the company. Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund plans to allocate 1% of its portfolio to digital assets starting in 2026, and the government is overhauling regulations to pave the way for domestic spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds. If those moves materialise, Metaplanet — with its massive stockpile and new brokerage arm — could find itself at the centre of a structural shift in Japan’s institutional crypto adoption. For now, though, the stock is left waiting for a sign.
