With its eagerly anticipated quarterly earnings report just days away, Micron Technology has made significant moves to expand its production footprint. The memory chip specialist has not only finalized the acquisition of a manufacturing facility in Taiwan but has also announced immediate plans to construct a second plant on the same site. This aggressive expansion is a direct response to the technology sector's surging need for specialized memory components designed for artificial intelligence applications.

Strategic Moves in Taiwan

Over the weekend, the company officially completed the purchase of the Tongluo plant from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC). The existing cleanroom facilities are now slated for retooling to rapidly scale up output of High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM). This advanced memory is critical for the operation of modern AI processors. Given that current demand vastly outstrips supply, Micron is already planning a second fab of comparable scale on the acquired land. Construction on this new facility is scheduled to commence by the end of the 2026 fiscal year.

This development in Taiwan is part of a broader global investment strategy. In late February, Micron inaugurated a new plant in India, supported by another major project in Singapore. Market analysts view this rapid pace as a sign of operational strength, noting that the company’s HBM production capacity for the current year is reportedly already fully allocated. Several Wall Street firms, including Wedbush and Citigroup, have recently raised their price targets for Micron shares in light of these developments.

Financial Performance and Forthcoming Results

The fundamental strength of the business is clearly reflected in its stock performance. Shares closed Friday’s trading session precisely at a new 52-week high of €371.80. This price point represents a staggering gain of nearly 295 percent over a twelve-month period.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?

This physical expansion sets the stage for the upcoming quarterly results, due this coming Wednesday. Industry experts are forecasting a sharp revenue surge to $18.7 billion, which would equate to sequential growth of approximately 37 percent compared to the prior quarter. In February, Chief Financial Officer Mark Murphy indicated that customer orders were significantly exceeding the company's ability to fulfill them.

Securing a Position in the AI Supply Chain

By securing manufacturing capacity in Taiwan and deepening its partnership with PSMC on advanced packaging technologies, Micron is solidifying its role within the AI supply chain. The first product shipments from the new Taiwanese complex are firmly scheduled for the 2028 fiscal year. However, the immediate focus will be on the earnings release on March 18, which is expected to provide concrete data on how much pricing power for HBM chips is already boosting current profit margins.
