Micron's 854% Rally: AI Memory Shortage vs Overheated Technicals

The market has already decided that Micron Technology is no longer a run-of-the-mill memory cycle stock. The numbers are staggering: a 267% gain since January and a 854% surge over the past twelve months, lifting the share price to 988.80 euros, just 1.4% below its all-time high of 1,002.80 euros. But the real test arrives on June 24, when the company reports fiscal third-quarter results — and the tension between a structural memory shortage and an overheated technical picture will be laid bare.

That shortage is no longer just an analyst talking point. Apple’s Tim Cook recently announced iPhone price increases of 5% to 10%, citing rising memory chip costs — an unusually public endorsement of Micron’s pricing muscle. Gene Munster of Deepwater calls it “memory inflation,” a clear signal that the company’s ability to pass on costs is intact. With Micron’s entire High Bandwidth Memory production capacity for 2026 already sold out, customers are scrambling for limited supply. Demand for HBM and DDR5 is flowing smoothly through the supply chain, and the company’s own guidance reinforces the story: third-quarter revenue is expected to hit a record $33.5 billion, with non-GAAP gross margins near 81%. That follows a second quarter in which revenue nearly tripled year over year to roughly $23.9 billion.

Wall Street’s reaction has been to raise price targets aggressively. Susquehanna now sees the stock reaching $1,750, UBS has a target of $1,625 (the highest on the Street), and both Deutsche Bank and Stifel/TD Cowen peg the stock at $1,500. Deutsche Bank lifted its target from $1,000, citing AI-driven demand stretching through 2028. That structural DRAM deficit, analysts believe, will persist at least until the second quarter of 2028, underpinning the argument that this rally has legs.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?

But the technical setup is stretched. The relative strength index sits at 66.7, approaching overbought territory without quite entering it. The stock trades 56% above its 50-day moving average and a stunning 186% above the 200-day average — a sign that momentum has been anything but gradual. Annualized 30-day volatility of 97% underscores that this is no steady compounder; it’s a crowded trade with large daily swings.

Behind the price action lies a deeper strategic play. Micron has moved aggressively to lock in its position as a critical AI infrastructure supplier. It began shipping HBM4 in March for NVIDIA’s Vera-Rubin platform, and in June it selected Bechtel as the construction and procurement partner for the first phase of a memory fabrication complex in Clay, New York — a project designed to expand U.S. semiconductor capacity and secure the supply chain. Meanwhile, rival SK Hynix has already delivered samples of its 12-layer HBM4E for NVIDIA’s upcoming Vera-Rubin-Ultra architecture, ensuring the technology race remains intense.

The paradox at the core of the stock is this: Micron benefits from scarcity, yet its long-term strategy is to invest billions in capacity that, if successful, could ease that very scarcity. On June 24, investors will learn whether the company can deliver the $19.15 per share (non-GAAP) that the market expects. If it does, the $1.28 trillion market capitalization will have firmer fundamental footing — and the next wave of analyst targets comes into view. If it stumbles, the scarcity premium that has driven this 12-month rally will face its first real test of credibility.
