Meta's internal cloud division threatens Nebius's $27B contract, sparking 17% stock drop despite 684% revenue growth and lofty valuation.

One single customer represents more than a quarter of Nebius’s contracted revenue. That same customer is now quietly laying the groundwork to become a direct competitor. For a stock that has soared more than 350% over the past twelve months, the math is suddenly far less comfortable.

Bloomberg reported on July 1 that Meta Platforms is building a cloud division internally, dubbed “Meta Compute,” to market its spare computing power and proprietary AI models to outside developers. The Facebook parent already holds a multi-year deal with Nebius worth up to $27 billion — roughly $12 billion of which is classified as booked capacity. Word of the move wiped 17% off Nebius’s share price in a single session, erasing nearly $11.9 billion in market value.

Growth numbers that still dazzle

The operational side of the story remains explosive. In the first quarter of 2026, Nebius reported revenue of $399 million, a 684% year-over-year surge that comfortably beat analyst expectations. Its AI-cloud segment alone jumped 841% to $390 million. Adjusted EBITDA came in at $129.5 million, and the company is holding to its full-year guidance of an annualised revenue run rate between $7 billion and $9 billion, with total revenue of $3 billion to $3.4 billion and an adjusted EBITDA margin of roughly 40%.

That breakneck expansion requires staggering capital. Nebius boosted its 2026 capex plan from $16–$20 billion to $20–$25 billion, most of it destined for capacity coming online in 2027. The company has already locked in over 4 gigawatts of contracted power capacity, including 1.2 gigawatts for a new AI factory in Pennsylvania — a facility whose timeline confirmation is expected later this year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nebius?

The market votes with its feet

Despite the quarterly fireworks, investor anxiety has been mounting. At Friday’s close of €194.00, the stock managed a 2.79% daily gain, but the recent picture is uglier: down 8.32% over the past week and 10.62% over the past month. The 52-week high of €261.00, touched on June 22, now lies 25.67% above the current price.

Short interest has climbed to 20.13% by one measure — or as high as 24% according to other reports. Insider sales over the last three months totalled $124.7 million, with not a single purchase recorded this year. The annualised volatility of 105.54% over the past 30 days underscores how jittery the shareholder base has become.

The $15 billion question

The heart of the concern is whether Meta will ever exercise the optional portion of its contract — the $15 billion slice beyond the $12 billion already booked. If Meta’s internal cloud effort reduces the need to buy capacity from third parties, that optional volume may never materialise, capping the very growth that justifies Nebius’s lofty valuation.

The numbers that give bulls pause are stark. Nebius currently trades at an EV/Sales multiple of 63.14, far above the IT-sector median, and a price-to-earnings ratio of 70.83. A quantitative analysis on July 4 assigned a “Sell” rating. On the bearish side, Morgan Stanley analysts see fair value at just $144 per share — a significant discount to Friday’s level. The more optimistic camp at Northland, by contrast, maintains a $248 target and views the recent dip as a tactical entry point.

Chart levels that matter

Technically, the stock is walking a narrow ledge. The 50-day moving average sits at €190.42, just 1.88% below Friday’s close. A sustained break below that line would open the door to the 100-day average at €144.92, a level that would mark a further 25% decline from current prices. The 200-day line at €115.82, meanwhile, serves as a reminder that the longer-term trend is still intact.

Nebius at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The 14-day relative strength index of 44.8 places the stock in neutral territory, but the sharp daily swings suggest that sentiment could pivot quickly on any fresh news from Menlo Park.

Waiting for clarity

In the trading week ahead, the market will be watching closely for an official statement from Meta regarding its cloud ambitions. If Meta confirms that the booked $12 billion in capacity will proceed without disruption, a recovery toward the psychologically important €200 mark looks plausible. Any sign of delay or scaling back, however — or additional warnings about debt-funded AI spending, such as the one recently issued by the Bank for International Settlements — could trigger another leg lower.

For now, Nebius finds itself in an uncomfortable bind: its most important customer is also its most threatening competitor, and the $46.4 billion order backlog that underpins 86% of its market capitalisation is only as strong as the commercial trust that holds it together.
