Nebius Stock Volatility: AI Infrastructure Boom vs. Meta Threat

The Nebius share has become a poster child for the AI infrastructure mania – and its hangover. With a 30-day annualized volatility of 106.14%, the stock is pricing in anything but normal market risk. The wild swings reflect a binary bet: whether Nebius can execute on an epic capacity ramp before a potential cloud entry by Meta Platforms rewrites the competitive landscape.

Shares closed at €197.98 on Friday, clawing back ground after a roller-coaster week. The trouble started when Bloomberg reported that Meta is exploring direct sales of its excess AI computing power, potentially turning a key customer pool into a direct rival. The news sent Nebius and peer CoreWeave tumbling more than 6% in a single session. Investors quickly learned that the plan is still unconfirmed and not a formal product launch, but the damage to sentiment was done.

Just a day later, Nebius released its first-quarter 2026 results and shifted the narrative back to operational firepower. The company revealed it has already secured over 3.5 gigawatts of contracted power capacity, blowing past its original target of 2.5 GW by year-end. Management promptly raised its forecast: at least 4 GW by December 31, with a long-term ambition of more than 5 GW by 2030. The stock responded with a 4.87% jump on Thursday, followed by further gains on Friday.

Behind the headline numbers lies a story of margin discipline. Adjusted EBITDA margin in the AI cloud business nearly doubled quarter over quarter to 45% in Q1, and the company is guiding for around 40% for the full year. Management attributes that to cost control rather than pricing power – a key reassurance given the looming threat from Meta.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nebius?

The bull case rests on execution velocity. Nebius is building faster than even its own forecasts. More than 75% of its total power capacity now comes from direct contracts, giving it tighter control over the infrastructure chain. Analysts have largely kept their buy ratings following the earnings release, betting that operational momentum will outweigh competitive noise.

Yet the bear case is equally compelling. The company is racing to expand data-center capacity from 170 megawatts to between 800 MW and 1 GW by the end of 2026, and its number of sites from seven to 16. That requires enormous upfront capital – new equity and debt – long before utilization and operating leverage kick in. Any delay in customer onboarding cuts deep. Meanwhile, Meta’s potential move into enterprise cloud, if it materializes as more than a capacity-dump side project, could erode pricing power across the entire neocloud segment just as Nebius needs fat margins to justify further funding rounds.

The current market capitalization of over €61 billion rests on a delicate foundation. The stock remains 24.15% below its 52-week high of €261.00, hit on June 22. For all the progress, year-to-date gains stand at 158.80% – a number that screams story stock more than stable infrastructure play.

Nebius at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

For now, the market is prepared to give Nebius the benefit of the doubt as long as capacity targets keep rising and margins hold near guidance. But the next real test will be whether Meta’s cloud plan moves from rumor to official product. Until that question is settled, the stock’s extraordinary volatility is likely here to stay.
