Newron’s stock has been on a harrowing slide since January, shedding more than half its value, but the shares managed a 2.39% gain this week to close at €12.85. The modest uptick owes less to chart dynamics and more to a pair of financial and regulatory developments that have steadied investor nerves.

The Italian biotech, focused on central nervous system disorders, has been wrestling with a clinical hold on US recruitment for its lead candidate Evenamide — a novel glutamate modulator being developed as an add-on therapy for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. That hold, imposed by the FDA after a patient death outside the US during the ENIGMA-TRS 2 study, has weighed heavily on sentiment. But an independent safety committee concluded the fatality was unrelated to the drug, and Newron has now held a constructive Type A meeting with the regulator to discuss protocol amendments aimed at reopening US enrolment.

While the FDA dialogue plays out, the company’s broader Phase III programme remains on track. ENIGMA-TRS 1 continues to recruit across Europe, Asia, Latin America and Canada without interruption. The 52-week study, alongside ENIGMA-TRS 2, forms the backbone of Evenamide’s pivotal data package. If successful, the drug would become the first approved adjunctive therapy for patients who fail to respond to conventional antipsychotics — a significant unmet need in schizophrenia treatment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Newron SpA?

Financially, Newron has fortified its position. The company has secured a €38 million capital increase, with €15 million already in hand and a further €11 million expected by November 2026. On top of that, a renegotiated credit line with the European Investment Bank has been extended through June 2028. Combined with a $46.1 million upfront payment from EA Pharma, part of the Eisai group, for rights to Evenamide in Japan and other Asian markets, Newron says its funding runway now stretches into the first half of 2027 — comfortably past the next major catalyst.

That catalyst is the top-line data from the primary 12-week endpoint of ENIGMA-TRS 1, expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company has flagged this readout as the next defining moment for its valuation. Until then, every update on the US recruitment restart for ENIGMA-TRS 2 is likely to drive short-term price action.

The technical picture reflects the uncertainty. The stock trades 5.85% below its 50-day moving average of €13.65, with a relative strength index of 45.4 signalling neutral territory. Annualised volatility of 35.62% underscores the market’s anxiety ahead of the data. From a 52-week high of €34.15 reached in January, the shares remain roughly 62% lower — a reminder of how quickly sentiment can shift in pre-revenue biotech.

For now, the combination of a clearer FDA path, a fortified balance sheet, and a fixed date for pivotal results has given the stock a floor. Whether that floor holds will depend on what the fourth quarter brings.
