Nokia shares pulled back on Friday, with the Helsinki-listed stock dropping 3.36% to €10.93 as investors locked in profits after a sharp rally triggered by a high-profile defense partnership and a multibillion-dollar expansion in U.S. semiconductor production. The retreat trimmed the session’s earlier exuberance but left the stock up nearly 96% year to date — a trajectory that has more than doubled the share price over the past twelve months.

The profit-taking came one day after Nokia’s American depositary receipts and European shares surged almost 9% on news that Nokia Defense had sealed a joint venture with NestAI. The two companies unveiled a suite of AI-powered defense systems on July 10, designed for operations in “denied zones” and compliant with NATO standards. The technology package includes AI-driven command-and-control platforms running on mobile 5G networks, mission-planning tools that factor in network conditions, and integrated sensing and communication capabilities for earlier threat detection. The collaboration builds on a joint investment of €100 million with Finnish state-backed investor Tesi, announced in 2025.

Behind the broader rally, however, lies a deeper strategic shift. Nokia is pouring roughly $4 billion into expanding its domestic chip manufacturing footprint. At its plant in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the company plans to tenfold its capacity for photonic chips — critical components for optical high-speed networks used to connect GPU clusters in AI data centers. A second factory in San Jose, California, will focus on indium-phosphide semiconductors. These moves aim to secure the supply chain for next-generation AI-native mobile and fixed networks, positioning Nokia as a key beneficiary of the current network-infrastructure cycle.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

Wall Street has taken notice. JPMorgan recently raised its price target on Nokia to $21 (roughly €19.30), implying upside of over 60% from Friday’s close. The upgrade is underpinned by roughly €1 billion in AI- and cloud-related optical-network orders already secured, with an additional pipeline stretching into 2027. Nokia’s AI and cloud revenue jumped 49% in the first quarter and now accounts for 8% of total sales. The bank also highlighted the company’s ability to integrate 5G with AI automation tools now available through cloud marketplaces such as Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services.

Meanwhile, Fidelity reduced its stake in Nokia below the 5% reporting threshold. Through its FMR LLC arm, the asset manager’s holding stood at 4.87% of shares and 4.59% of voting rights as of July 8. Market observers view the move as routine portfolio rebalancing rather than a loss of confidence, noting that the stock has rallied 151.7% over the past twelve months. Separately, Nokia completed a planned internal transaction on July 9, transferring 43,552,813 treasury shares to participants in its equity-based compensation programs, based on a board resolution from October 2025. The company now holds 88,583,624 own shares.

Technically, the stock remains in a long-term uptrend but is facing near-term headwinds. It trades 44% above its 200-day moving average of €7.58, yet sits 27% below the 52-week high of €14.97 reached on June 3. The 50-day average of €12.09 is acting as resistance, and the share price has fallen 5.8% over the past month. The relative strength index stands at 43.6, leaving room for movement in either direction without signaling overbought or oversold conditions.

All eyes are now on Nokia’s second-quarter and half-year results, due July 23. The consensus forecast calls for earnings of $0.07 per share on revenue of $5.59 billion — a notable improvement from $0.04 a year earlier. Analysts will scrutinize the “Deploy & Integrate” unit, which recently launched an AI-powered network deployment platform; the company says it improves first-installation rates by 25% and cuts time-to-market for new sites by 30%. With a market capitalization of €61.58 billion, Nokia’s ability to sustain momentum in optical and IP networking will be a key focus. The defense partnership and U.S. chip investments have set a high bar — now the quarterly numbers will show whether the operational foundation matches the strategic ambition.
