Nokia is doubling down on artificial intelligence from two very different angles. The Finnish networking group has inked a partnership with Indonesian operator Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison to deploy AI-powered 5G radio access networks across the archipelago, while simultaneously unveiling a cybersecurity platform designed to counter AI-driven DDoS attacks. The twin announcements underscore Nokia’s ambition to position itself as a critical infrastructure provider in the AI era — even as its stock retreats sharply from a blistering rally.

AI-RAN Field Trials Set for Second Half of 2026

The Indonesia deal centres on what Nokia calls AI-RAN technology, a joint effort with GPU giant NVIDIA that brings computing and network intelligence closer to users and enterprise applications. The partners already staged the first AI-RAN call at Mobile World Congress 2026, and field tests across the Southeast Asian nation are slated to start before the end of the year.

Nokia will supply its Habrok and Pandion radio families, Levante baseband equipment, and platforms for centralised RAN and network automation. On the buildout timetable, low-band 5G will blanket the entire network, while mid-band 5G — the backbone for high-capacity services — is targeted for roughly 80% of the footprint within three and a half years. Nokia did not disclose the contract’s financial terms.

A New Line of Defence Against AI-Powered Botnets

On the security front, Nokia introduced Deepfield Genome Shield, a solution designed to protect network operators from increasingly sophisticated DDoS attacks. Traditional defences are no longer sufficient as modern botnets can marshal some 200 million compromised devices to unleash data floods measured in multiple terabits per second.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

The platform operates on four core pillars: disrupting communication between botnets and their command?and?control servers, enforcing DDoS mitigation rules, allowing custom security policies, and providing deep network visibility. It integrates natively with Nokia’s own 7750 router series and is designed to work with third?party equipment. Red Dot Technologies is the first commercial customer.

Share Pullback After a Spectacular Run

Despite the positive newsflow, Nokia’s stock has been under heavy selling pressure. The shares closed at EUR 12.01 in a recent session but slid to EUR 11.90 on Tuesday, a 5.59% drop that leaves the stock nearly 20% below its 52?week high of EUR 14.97 set on 3 June. Over the past seven days the equity has lost around 16.5%.

The correction comes after a monster rally. Since the start of the year Nokia shares have more than doubled — up 113.81% — and they have tripled over twelve months. The 30?day annualised volatility stands at 87% and the relative strength index has cooled to 47.8, suggesting the extremes of momentum have passed but leaving the stock vulnerable to further profit?taking.

Earnings as the Next Catalyst

Strategically, the new deals fit neatly into Nokia’s 2026 narrative. In the first quarter, network infrastructure revenue grew 6%, optical networks jumped 20%, and revenue from AI and cloud customers surged 49%. The company booked EUR 1 billion in orders from that segment alone. For the full year, Nokia maintains its guidance for comparable operating profit of between EUR 2.0 billion and EUR 2.5 billion.

The Indonesia contract does not directly alter those targets, but it provides further proof that Nokia can combine 5G infrastructure, AI and automation in large emerging markets. Meanwhile, Deepfield Genome Shield extends the company’s security footprint. Investors will get a fuller picture on 23 July, when Nokia reports its half?year results — a crucial test of whether order intake and revenue can sustain the elevated expectations baked into the share price.
