Pentagon Blacklist Sinks BYD Stock to 52-Week Trough Even as Export Volumes Surge 80%

BYD shares drop nearly 44% from peak after Pentagon blacklist and EU tariffs, but record exports and upcoming Seal 08 launch may fuel a rebound.

BYD’s shares touched a fresh 52-week intraday low of €8.08 on Friday before closing at €8.29, leaving the stock nursing a near-44% decline from its 12-month peak of €14.80. The sell-off has accelerated over the past 30 days, with the counter shedding roughly 17% of its value. The relative strength index has fallen to 20.6, deep inside oversold territory — a signal that, in normal circumstances, would typically trigger a rebound.

But these are not normal circumstances for the world’s largest electric-vehicle maker. A fortnight ago, on 8 June, the Pentagon added BYD to its blacklist of Chinese companies deemed to have military links. The company has denied any connection to the defence industry and is considering legal action. Starting 30 June, the designation bars BYD from US defence contracts, though no broader trade sanctions are attached. The news has compounded a string of headwinds that already included EU tariffs on Chinese EVs and a brutal price war on BYD’s home turf.

Yet BYD’s underlying business tells a very different story. In May, the group shipped more than 160,000 vehicles overseas — an 80% jump year-on-year. Management has lifted its full-year 2026 export target to 1.5 million units. Global deliveries between August 2024 and August 2025 reached roughly 2.56 million electric vehicles, according to SNE Research, outpacing Geely and Tesla combined.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The international push is taking concrete shape. BYD’s first European factory, in Hungary, is scheduled to start production in the fourth quarter of 2026, a move designed to circumvent EU levies on Chinese-built EVs. Plans for a Turkish plant have been paused, however. In Malaysia, the company is building a megawatt fast-charging network, and in the UK, the Dolphin G — BYD’s cheapest plug-in hybrid — will arrive before the end of the year.

Domestically, BYD is preparing to launch the Seal 08 on 2 July 2026. The large sedan measures 5,150 mm in length with a wheelbase of 3,030 mm. The all-electric version rides on an 800-volt platform with second-generation Blade batteries and is expected to deliver up to 900 kilometres of range. The plug-in hybrid variant pairs a 115-kW motor with the DM-i system for a combined range of around 1,000 kilometres. Vehicles are already on display in showrooms across 20 Chinese cities.

The operational momentum has prompted analysts to maintain overwhelmingly bullish calls on BYD’s Hong Kong-listed H-shares, where the median price target stands at HK$123.19. The gap between that target and the current share price is enormous — but so far, geopolitical fears have drowned out fundamentals.

For investors, the Seal 08 launch on 2 July will be a critical test. Strong order numbers from the home market could provide the catalyst that finally narrows the disconnect between BYD’s export-led expansion and its battered stock price. Until then, the Pentagon blacklist, EU trade barriers, and a domestic margin squeeze will keep the share price pinned near the floor.
