Plug Power is moving aggressively to shore up its balance sheet through asset sales, yet the market is greeting the moves with fresh selling pressure. The hydrogen fuel-cell developer signed a binding agreement to sell its project in Graham, Texas, unlocking up to $90.5 million in total liquidity when combined with the expected release of roughly $14 million in cash collateral. The transaction is slated to close by the end of July.

The cash infusion arrives at a critical moment. As of June 30, 2026, Plug Power held around $162 million in freely available liquid funds — meaning the Texas deal alone could boost that figure by more than 50%. And it is not the only wire being pulled. The company simultaneously renegotiated terms for its Gateway project in New York with partner Stream US Data Centers. Under the revised agreement, Stream is releasing a $6.5 million deposit and placing a new $10 million land-purchase deposit. The land sale will close first, while the remaining asset sale has been pushed back to March 2027 pending regulatory approvals. The $142 million purchase price remains unchanged.

Taken together, the two transactions with Stream could improve Plug Power's liquidity by more than $275 million, effectively doubling the cash reserves the company held at the end of the second quarter. Management describes the sales as part of a deliberate strategy to streamline infrastructure and meet liquidity targets for 2026 — all while avoiding the issuance of additional shares that would dilute existing holders.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Yet the stock has not rewarded the news. On Monday, shares closed at €1.90, continuing a sell-off that has pushed the equity deep into technically oversold territory. Over the past seven trading sessions, the stock lost 12.7%, and the one-month decline stands at 21.5%. Still, the 12-month picture tells a different story: Plug Power shares remain 41.8% higher than a year ago, with the current price sitting 57.4% above the 52-week low of €1.21 reached in August 2025.

The technical damage is stark. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 25.9, well below the 30 threshold that chartists consider oversold. The stock trades 29.9% below its 50-day moving average of €2.71 and 15.9% under its 200-day average of €2.26. The annualized 30-day volatility of 59% underscores the violent swings that have characterized Plug Power's recent price action.

The distance from recent highs is equally jarring. From the 52-week peak of €3.72 touched on June 2, 2026, the stock has fallen nearly 49%. Analysts, however, see substantial upside from current levels. The average price target among Wall Street analysts stands at $3.22, while European analysts peg the target at €3.11 — representing potential gains of more than 60% from Monday's close. The consensus rating remains "Hold."

With a market capitalization of around €2.72 billion, Plug Power remains one of the largest pure-play hydrogen names in public markets and one of the most volatile. The current chapter tests whether asset sales and liquidity maneuvers like the Stream deals can buy enough time for the broader turnaround story to gain traction — before investor patience runs out entirely.
