Plug Power Inc. shares have surged over 40% year-to-date, a rally fueled by a critical financial milestone. For the first time, the hydrogen fuel cell company reported a positive gross margin of 2.4% in the fourth quarter of 2025, a dramatic reversal from the negative 122.5% margin recorded a year earlier. This operational progress, however, is unfolding against a backdrop of significant legal and financial challenges that threaten its ambitious profitability roadmap.

The improvement stems from a fundamental shift in the company's business model. Plug Power is now producing a significant portion of its hydrogen internally at facilities in Georgia, Louisiana, and Tennessee, slashing its procurement costs to roughly one-third of previous levels. This was showcased recently as management hosted an investor tour at its St. Gabriel, Louisiana plant, a facility capable of liquefying up to 15 tons of hydrogen daily. This site is pivotal, boosting the company's total U.S. production capacity to 40 tons per day.

Financially, the latest quarterly results showed tangible progress. Revenue for Q4 2025 reached $225 million, an 18% increase over the prior quarter and above analyst forecasts. The loss per share of $0.06 also beat expectations of a $0.10 loss. For the full 2025 fiscal year, revenue climbed to approximately $710 million. Yet these gains are offset by a substantial net loss of $1.63 billion for the year and a staggering accumulated deficit of $8.2 billion on the balance sheet.

While the stock has more than tripled over the past twelve months, closing recently at €2.66, Wall Street maintains a cautious stance. Analysts at Susquehanna and RBC Capital rate the stock as neutral, with price targets around $2.75. The consensus rating remains a "Hold," with earnings estimates having recently trended slightly lower.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

This skepticism is compounded by new operational and legal headwinds. A federal judge in Delaware, Jennifer L. Hall, has allowed parts of a shareholder lawsuit to proceed. The case centers on allegations the company missed hydrogen production targets set for late 2022 and made questionable revenue projections, with claims supported by statements from former employees.

Simultaneously, the company faces mounting cost pressures from international trade policies. New tariffs on fuel cell components from China and electrolyzer imports from Europe, the latter now taxed at 20%, threaten to squeeze supply chains and could delay the path to profitability.

CEO Jose Luis Crespo has been actively communicating the company's refocused strategy, even taking to Reddit on April 16th for a direct Q&A with retail investors. The session sparked a 1,500% surge in message volume on Stocktwits, where sentiment turned "extremely bullish." Crespo outlined a strategic pivot towards data centers, industrial power, and logistics while emphasizing capital-preserving strategies.

Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

His publicly stated goals are clear: achieve positive EBITDAS by the end of 2026, reach positive operating income by the end of 2027, and attain full profitability by the end of 2028. To strengthen its financial position, Plug Power raised over $275 million in asset sales in Q1 2026, including a pending deal to sell its "Project Gateway" site to Stream Data Centers for at least $132.5 million.

All eyes are now on the upcoming earnings report scheduled between May 8th and 12th, which will cover the first quarter of 2026. Analysts anticipate revenue of $141 million and a loss of $0.10 per share. The key question for investors is whether the hard-won gross margin can be sustained amidst tariff pressures or if the recent optimism will face a setback.
