The Renault Austral E-Tech Full Hybrid 200 rolls out of the depot with a faint electric hum, its LED signature reflected in damp asphalt before sunrise. This mid-size SUV is Renault’s new weapon for families and fleet managers who want lower fuel bills without going fully electric.

From Mégane to Austral SUV

Renault Austral replaces the Renault Kadjar as the brand’s key C-segment SUV in Europe, sitting above the Captur and below the larger Espace and Rafale crossover lines. Luca de Meo, Renault CEO, has repeatedly framed the Austral as part of the company’s “Nouvelle Vague” strategy to move upmarket while keeping volumes.

The Austral rides on the CMF-CD platform developed with alliance partner Nissan, offering front-wheel drive and a choice of mild-hybrid and full-hybrid powertrains. The E-Tech Full Hybrid 200 version pairs a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo petrol engine with dual electric motors and a multi-mode clutchless automatic gearbox.

Official Renault data puts system output at 146 kW, or 200 hp, with up to 410 Nm of combined torque in certain drive conditions. The hybrid can operate in full electric mode at low speeds and uses predictive energy management based on navigation data in higher trims.

On the French market, WLTP combined fuel consumption for the Austral E-Tech Full Hybrid 200 starts around 4.6–5.0 liters per 100 kilometers, depending on wheel size and equipment. CO? emissions are listed from roughly 104 g/km, placing the model well below many pure combustion rivals.

Interior, tech and first touch impressions

Slide into the driver’s seat and the first thing that catches the eye is the OpenR cockpit with a vertical 12-inch central touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The glass panel feels cool under the fingers, and the interface responds with a soft haptic buzz and clean graphics.

Google built-in is a key feature: selected trims integrate Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play directly into the infotainment, with over-the-air updates delivered during the vehicle’s life cycle. Space, practicality and towing

The Austral’s overall length of about 4.51 meters places it squarely in the mainstream mid-size SUV bracket. Luggage space for the hybrid versions reaches up to around 555 liters with the rear bench in place, according to Renault’s French configurator, and can expand beyond 1,400 liters when folded.

A more hands-on detail that matters to fleet users is towing capacity: the Austral E-Tech Full Hybrid 200 is rated for up to 1,800 kg braked trailer weight in many European specifications. That figure makes the hybrid suitable for medium caravans or work trailers, something not every electrified SUV can claim.

Trims, pricing and availability

In France, the Austral E-Tech Full Hybrid 200 is offered in several trims such as techno, esprit Alpine and iconic esprit Alpine, each layering equipment like adaptive cruise control, 360-degree camera and advanced lane-centering. The esprit Alpine design pack adds dark exterior elements and specific seats with blue stitching inspired by Renault’s Alpine brand.

As of mid-2026, the hybrid Austral remains widely available across key European markets including France, Germany, Spain and Italy, with orders handled through dealerships and online configurators. Renault positions the SUV for private buyers and for company-car fleets, with dedicated business offers via its Renault Pro+ network.

Safety and driver assistance

Euro NCAP testing in 2023 awarded the Renault Austral a five-star safety rating, underlining strong crash protection and comprehensive assistance systems. The SUV offers up to 32 advanced driver-assistance systems including lane-keeping aid, adaptive cruise with Stop & Go, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.

On higher trims, an optional 4Control Advanced system adds four-wheel steering, tightening the turning circle to about 10.1 meters and improving stability at highway speeds. That means the Austral can feel surprisingly agile when maneuvering in tight city car parks or narrow depot yards.

Focus on emissions and fleets

For corporate customers, the Austral’s E-Tech Full Hybrid 200 configuration is designed to lower fuel and emissions without relying on charging infrastructure. Fleet managers in France and Germany can mix Austral hybrids with Renault’s fully electric Mégane E-Tech and Scenic E-Tech to balance driver needs and tax treatments.

Renault’s internal documents stress that lower real-world fuel consumption and CO? figures help companies meet internal sustainability targets while staying within budget constraints. In practice, this means the Austral often ends up as a default choice for sales representatives who cover long distances and need predictable refueling.
