Shares in the Augsburg-based defense contractor have been caught between a second analyst target reduction in as many months and mounting uncertainty over the financing of a major British acquisition. The stock closed Friday at €43.83, leaving it 41.47 percent lower than a year ago and just 8.48 percent above its 52-week trough of €40.41 touched on June 25.

Jefferies reaffirmed its "Buy" rating on Renk late Thursday but trimmed the price target for the second time in 2026. The new target of €60, down from €70 and previously €78 in May, reflects a shift in methodology: the bank will now apply a sum-of-the-parts valuation based on 2028 estimates. Analyst Chloe Lemarie has rotated her sector preference toward Leonardo, the Italian aerospace and defense group, which she sees as offering the greatest value appeal in European defense electronics. For civil exposure, she favors Rolls-Royce.

The price target cut landed alongside news that Renk has signed a binding agreement with Stellex Capital Management to acquire British gearbox specialist David Brown Defence. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter, pending regulatory approvals, but the purchase price remains undisclosed. The financing structure is the key question: if Renk takes on new debt to fund the transaction, its leverage will rise at a time when sector sentiment is already fragile.

That fragility is partly a hangover from a shock decision in late June, when the German government unexpectedly scrapped the multi-billion-euro F126 frigate program and awarded the contract to TKMS instead. Renk was only a subcontractor on the program, but the cancellation amplified the negative mood surrounding German naval and defense suppliers. Rheinmetall lost around 20 percent of its market value on the day and has yet to fully recover.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?

The technical picture does little to reassure. Renk’s current price sits well below both its 50-day moving average of €48.01 and its 200-day moving average of €54.96 – the latter implying a gap of over 20 percent. The relative strength index at 42.1 points to a neutral-to-slightly-bearish bias, while the annualized 30-day volatility of 50.45 percent underscores persistent uncertainty.

Not all analysts stand behind Jefferies’ conviction call. MWB Research has downgraded Renk from "Buy" to "Hold" and set a price target of just €50, reflecting skepticism about near-term catalysts. Even at Jefferies’ new €60 target, the implied upside of roughly 37 percent from current levels will require a sharp reversal in market confidence.

Valuations across the sector remain elevated. Rheinmetall trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of about 101, Hensoldt at roughly 96, and Renk at a relatively modest but still lofty 53. Market capitalizations diverge sharply: Rheinmetall is worth around €49.4 billion, Hensoldt €9.1 billion, and Renk €4.31 billion.

Renk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Renk’s management now faces a delicate balancing act. The company must complete the David Brown Defence acquisition without overextending its balance sheet, while proving that integration synergies in the naval business will materialize quickly. The next quarterly report will offer a first glimpse of how US contracts and marine expansion are feeding into order intake, delivery capacity, and margins.

Until the deal closes in the fourth quarter, the stock remains vulnerable to news-driven swings in either direction. A smooth execution could close the yawning gap between a record order backlog and a depressed share price. Any delay or financing misstep, however, risks leaving the shares trapped near their lows.
