As European aerospace giants face analyst downgrades, defense specialists like Renk are moving into the spotlight. The Augsburg-based supplier of critical drive systems is set for a pivotal investor call this week, where management must address persistent cash flow concerns and geopolitical risks. This comes as Jefferies raised its price target on the stock to EUR 78, citing the resilience of the land defense sector.

Jefferies analyst Chloe Lemarie upgraded Renk to a "Buy" recommendation, simultaneously downgarding peers Safran and Leonardo to "Hold." She pointed to potential headwinds in the civil aerospace aftermarket as a reason to favor defense-exposed names. Renk's dominance in mission-critical niches supports this view; the company holds an estimated 40% share in NATO naval gearboxes and is a leading supplier for main battle tanks like the Leopard 2.

This optimism is echoed across the market. Other institutions maintain bullish stances, with Berenberg Bank targeting EUR 76, JPMorgan at EUR 75 with an "Overweight" rating, DZ Bank seeing a fair value of EUR 65, and Warburg Research targeting EUR 63. The average analyst price target sits around EUR 70, implying a theoretical upside of roughly 25% from Tuesday's closing price of EUR 54.67.

The stock has shown tentative recovery, gaining over 5% on a monthly basis after hitting a low near EUR 46 in late March. However, it remains well below its record high from last October, currently trading around EUR 57. The upcoming pre-close call today and a presentation at a Munich capital markets conference tomorrow are seen as critical events that could determine if this recovery gains sustainable momentum.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?

Investors will be listening closely for convincing answers on two main fronts. First, the company's cash flow generation has lagged despite a record order book, partly due to EUR 200 million worth of orders shifting from the end of last year into the first half of 2026. Second, the German government's arms embargo against Israel poses a direct threat. Renk supplies transmission systems for Israel's Merkava and Namer tanks, with analysts estimating the at-risk revenue for this year at EUR 80 to 100 million.

Despite these challenges, management has not wavered from its full-year guidance. The company is targeting total revenue of more than EUR 1.5 billion and an adjusted operating result of up to EUR 285 million. To meet soaring demand, it is ramping up annual production capacity at its Augsburg site to approximately 800 units, supported by new facilities in Poland, India, and the USA.

A key source of support is the German military's Puma infantry fighting vehicle program. In March, Renk booked an order for 188 transmissions, with deliveries scheduled to begin in June 2027 and run through the end of 2030. The company expects further component orders in the second quarter. Long-term, the group plans to generate nearly all its revenue from the defense segment by the end of the decade.

Renk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The week's events set the stage for the official first-quarter figures due on May 6. Management's ability to provide robust explanations for its operational hurdles will be crucial in determining whether the stock can break through key technical resistance levels and capitalize on its newfound analyst favor.
