Renk's Record Order Book Battles Cash Flow Doubts and Short Sellers

The German defense supplier Renk finds itself in a curious tug-of-war. While sitting on a record order backlog, its stock is under significant pressure from skeptical investors and a sudden geopolitical headwind. The company’s shares closed Thursday’s trading at 53.30 euros, a level nearly 40 percent below its yearly high and signaling a deeply oversold condition with an RSI of 29.3.
This pessimism is crystallizing in the actions of prominent short sellers. Hedge fund AQR has notably increased its net short position to 2.30 percent of the company’s outstanding shares. Their bet appears to center on execution risks, as Renk grapples with shifting revenue timelines and cash generation. Approximately 200 million euros in planned revenues have been pushed into the first half of 2026.
A new complication has emerged for the Augsburg-based gear system specialist. Partial suspensions of defense exports to Israel directly impact Renk, a key supplier of drive systems for the Merkava and Namer tank models. Analysts estimate the revenue risk for 2026 at 80 to 100 million euros, a material dent in the annual plan. While geopolitical tensions often drive investors toward defense stocks, these export restrictions are creating a counterweight.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?
At the heart of the market’s concern is the company’s cash flow performance. Despite impressive top-line growth, with revenue climbing nearly 20 percent to 1.37 billion euros in 2025, the free cash flow of 67 million euros fell well short of initial expectations. Delays in customer payments and increased working capital requirements were the primary culprits. For a firm boasting billions in orders, missing cash flow targets raises questions about operational quality.
This stands in stark contrast to the bullish outlook from several major financial institutions. J.P. Morgan maintains an "Overweight" rating with a 75-euro price target, while DZ Bank sees a fair value of 65 euros. The consensus among analysts points to a potential upside of over 30 percent, fueled by expectations of margin expansion as the company scales its industrial small-series production.
Management’s targets are ambitious. For 2026, the company is aiming for group revenue exceeding 1.5 billion euros, with adjusted EBIT projected between 255 and 285 million euros, centering around 270 million. The order backlog supporting this growth remains formidable at approximately 6.7 billion euros.
The coming weeks are critical for Renk to address the narrative. The company is scheduled to present at capital market conferences on April 21 and April 23. The most significant event will be the release of its official first-quarter 2026 figures on May 6. This report will provide concrete evidence of the company’s current delivery capabilities and cash flow trajectory. Strong results could put intense pressure on the short sellers, while another disappointment would likely see them increase their bets. The stock, which briefly rose 1.6 percent to 54.24 euros during Thursday's XETRA session before paring gains, remains far from its previous high above 90 euros. The May 6 update will be pivotal in determining whether that gap can begin to close.
