The Renk Group heads into its half-year report on August 6 with a stack of operational achievements but a stock price under persistent pressure from a sector-wide shift in investor sentiment. In May, the defence contractor posted its highest ever first-quarter order intake, and management reaffirmed full-year guidance for revenue above €1.5 billion. Yet the shares have lost nearly 20% since the start of 2026 and sit at 9.3% above their 52-week low of €40.41, a level touched on June 25.

The disconnect between order momentum and share price performance reflects a broader rotation away from land-system plays. The sell-off accelerated in early July after an analyst withdrew a buy recommendation on sector heavyweight Rheinmetall, citing a reallocation of NATO budgets toward air defence, drones and surveillance. Renk lost 4.5% in a single session in the wake of that call, and the stock has since oscillated near its year low, closing Friday at €44.16 — a 3.75% gain on the day that pushed it off its most recent trough but still well below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages by 9.7% and 21.9%, respectively.

Support around the €40 mark has become the central technical reference point for traders. The relative strength index (RSI-14) at 40.3 does not signal extreme oversold conditions, and annualized 30-day volatility of 49.66% points to the potential for sharp moves in either direction as news flow around NATO priorities and contract awards crystallises. Jefferies analyst Chloe Lemarie, who reiterated a "buy" rating and a €60 price target after the company's pre-close call with analysts last week, sees substantial upside from current levels. Still, the negative Chaikin Money Flow indicator suggests institutional capital continues to leave the stock despite the favourable valuation gap.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?

Operationally, Renk has been building its pipeline aggressively. In early July it completed the acquisition of UK-based David Brown Defence from Stellex Capital Management, adding marine propulsion capabilities. That followed a multi-year IDIQ framework agreement worth nearly $700 million from the US Army for the maintenance and modernisation of American vehicle fleets, awarded to Renk America in late June. At the Eurosatory trade show in mid-June, Renk announced a partnership with Finland's Patria to co-develop a concept for heavy unmanned ground vehicles. And in early June, production began on the 4,000th HSWL 354 gearbox for the Leopard 2 main battle tank — a milestone underscoring Renk's deep integration into KNDS's flagship programme.

That close relationship with KNDS, however, has introduced a separate overhang. The deutsch-französische defence group reduced its stake in Renk to around 10% of share capital in May, and the placement weighed on the stock at the time. A 180-day lockup period now prevents further sales until autumn 2026, when a new wave of selling could emerge. Adding to the sector's unease, KNDS itself postponed its own IPO amid the broader defence stock rout, signalling that equity market appetite for the land-systems segment remains fragile.

The annual shareholder meeting in June approved a dividend of €0.58 per share for fiscal 2025, representing a payout ratio of 40.9%. Dr. Klaus Richter took over as chairman of the supervisory board from Claus von Hermann, while CEO Dr. Alexander Sagel had his contract extended prematurely until 2032 — a move intended to signal continuity even as the stock struggles. BlackRock crossed a reporting threshold on May 7 and now holds 4.44% of voting rights, a rare piece of institutional support in a name that has shed more than half its value from the 52-week high of €88.73 set on October 3, 2025.

The half-year report due in less than three weeks will be the next real test. Investors will look for evidence that the record first-quarter order intake has sustained into the second quarter and that US and international programmes are translating into visible revenue momentum. Whether that operational progress can outweigh the structural worry about NATO budget shifts and the impending expiry of the KNDS lockup will decide if the €40 support level holds or gives way to a deeper correction.
