Renk's Record Orders and New Wheeled-Vehicle Push Can't Shake Off Dual Blows from Index Removal and Sector Rotation

The gulf between Renk's booming order book and its languishing share price has rarely been wider. The German drive specialist booked first-quarter orders of €582 million, pushing its total backlog to nearly €7 billion, while revenue climbed to €284 million and adjusted margins hit a sturdy 15%. Yet the stock continues to slide, closing at €47.20 on Friday and plumbing €45.22 on Monday—within spitting distance of its year low. Since January, the shares have shed roughly 18% of their value.
Two distinct headwinds are battering the equity. First, a purely technical event: on June 22, Renk will be ejected from the iSTOXX Europe Centenary Select 30 Index. The removal triggers forced selling by exchange-traded funds that track the benchmark, creating a wall of supply that depresses the stock regardless of fundamentals. Second, a broader sector rotation has taken hold. A ceasefire framework in the Iran conflict has eased geopolitical jitters, prompting investors to shift capital out of defence plays and into tourism and airline stocks. Uncertainty around the Franco-German MGCS main battle tank project has added to the gloom.
The company's leadership, meanwhile, is focused firmly on the future. At the Eurosatory defence exhibition in Paris, Renk unveiled an unmanned ground vehicle concept developed with Finnish partner Patria. The vehicle, weighing between 10 and 20 tonnes, is built around Renk's HSWL 076 transmission, which integrates mobility functions into a digital architecture that enables drive-by-wire control—a key step toward autonomous battlefield platforms. The firm also introduced the new ESM-280 gearbox, a move designed to crack the market for wheeled armoured vehicles, a segment it has historically left to tracked-vehicle drivelines.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?
These innovations, however, are not yet translating into orders that can arrest the stock's slide. The unmanned concept is a showcase for future development contracts, not a revenue generator today. "Hard orders are what's needed to stop the current downtrend," one market observer noted. The wheeled-vehicle push, while promising, will take time to yield tangible sales.
Technically, the picture is equally sobering. Renk's shares now trade roughly 19% below their 200-day moving average—a classic bearish signal. The index-driven selling pressure is expected to abate after June 22, but the rotation out of defence stocks may persist as long as geopolitical tensions remain muted.
For investors, the next major catalyst is the half-year results due on August 6. Management will need to back up its confirmed full-year guidance with fresh numbers, particularly in the fast-growing vehicle mobility segment that has been driving the group's performance. Until then, the stock remains caught between an impressive operational story and two powerful external drags.
