Renk Shares Find a Floor After Jefferies Upgrade, Yet the Technical Damage Is Deep

Renk’s stock managed to claw back some ground on Friday, snapping a vicious losing streak after analysts at Jefferies threw their weight behind the defense supplier. The shares closed at €42.72, a gain of 3.26%, following a reaffirmation of the bank’s buy rating. The catalyst was a fresh order from the U.S. Department of Defense for hydromechanical transmissions — a deal that Jefferies’ Chloe Lemarie argued underscores the health of Renk’s already bulging order book. Yet the bounce was modest compared with the scale of recent losses, and behind the single-day green candle lies a chart that still looks deeply troubled.
The recovery came just a day after the stock had touched a new 52-week low of €40.41. Over the past month, the shares have shed roughly 19%, and since the start of the year the decline has deepened to around 23%. On a weekly basis, the fall was nearly 11%, leaving the price well below its 200-day moving average of about €57. Technical indicators now flash an “oversold” signal, but that has offered little comfort: the support level at €40 remains the only obvious line in the sand, and the distance to the 50-day moving average is a hefty 14% to the downside.
The gulf between Renk’s operational performance and its stock price is glaring. In the first quarter, the company booked new orders worth €582 million, expanding its total order backlog to €6.9 billion. Adjusted operating profit climbed by more than 10% to €42.4 million, lifting the corresponding margin to 15%. Management reaffirmed its full-year guidance and continues to shift the center of gravity toward defense, targeting a 90% share of total revenue from the sector by 2030. The company’s transmissions, used in tanks and armored vehicles, are a direct beneficiary of the global rearmament cycle.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?
But market sentiment is driven by factors beyond the company’s control. No internal news is expected in the coming weeks; the next scheduled catalyst is a preliminary half-year outlook on July 16. Until then, macro events will dominate. Germany and the eurozone are due to release inflation data on Tuesday and Wednesday, and defense stocks have lately traded with heightened sensitivity to interest-rate expectations. A hotter-than-expected inflation print would put added pressure on Renk’s battered shares, while softer numbers could open the door to a more sustained technical rebound.
The disconnect could hardly be more stark: a booming order book, expanding margins, and long-term secular demand for military hardware on one side; a stock that has lost nearly a quarter of its value this year and is clinging to support just above €40 on the other. Friday’s bounce, if it holds, buys time. But until the technical picture repairs, Renk remains very much in the hands of the macro and the mood.
