Renk’s stock climbed 3.30% to €44.10 on Friday, defying a day when a major analyst cut on sector heavyweight Rheinmetall could have pulled the entire defense complex lower. The trigger for the move came from inside the Augsburg-based drivetrain specialist itself: a pre-closing release of preliminary second-quarter figures that showed a record quarterly order intake of around €620 million. The annual target of roughly €2 billion in orders remains intact after the strong performance.

The positive surprise stood in sharp contrast to the mixed signals that have clouded Renk’s shares over recent weeks. On Thursday, the stock had slipped 1.36% alongside losses at Rheinmetall and TKMS, after Rheinmetall unveiled a space collaboration with Norway’s state-owned Space Norway for Arctic maritime surveillance. Market observers could not pinpoint a uniform trigger for the sector-wide swings. Meanwhile, Bank of America slashed its price target for Rheinmetall from €1,770 to €1,300, citing an expected shift toward drones and precision weapons — though it kept a "Buy" rating. Rheinmetall itself reversed early losses to finish 1.48% higher.

Analyst opinions on Renk itself remain fractured. DZ Bank trimmed its fair value from €65 to €64 after the Eurosatory defense trade fair in late June. Jefferies, ahead of the full second-quarter report, maintained a "Buy" with a €60 target. MWB Research, which had already downgraded the stock from "Buy" to "Hold", cut its price target further to €48 from €50 in response to the preliminary numbers. The research house acknowledged strong operational momentum but flagged political risks from a leaked draft of Germany’s 2027 defense procurement budget, which it sees as mildly negative for Renk. As a result, MWB trimmed revenue estimates by 0.2% for 2026 to €1.541 billion, by 0.3% for 2027 to €1.815 billion, and by 1.5% for 2028 to €2.1 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?

Operational strength is not entirely unencumbered. Renk is deferring deliveries to Israel, shifting between €80 million and €100 million from the first half to the second half of the year. Adjusted EBIT is still growing faster than revenue, keeping profitability on track, but the delay will weigh on headline revenue in the first half. The full quarterly report due in the coming weeks will clarify how much the deferred Israeli shipments dent margins and whether the record order intake can sustain momentum.

Technically, Friday’s bounce did little to repair the chart damage. The stock remains roughly 50% below its 52-week high of €88.73 from October 2025, and still trades under the 50-day moving average of €47.04. Year to date, Renk has shed about 18.26% of its value, and at €44.10 it stands only 9.14% above the recent 52-week low of €40.41. The relative strength index sits at 45.6, squarely in neutral territory — neither oversold nor overbought. With sector sentiment swinging between peace hopes for Ukraine, new alliances, and budget leaks, analysts expect a volatile consolidation phase between the year’s low and the 50-day average until the full half-year figures provide a clearer directional cue.
