Defence gearbox maker Renk sees shares fall 10% in a week due to Iran ceasefire and iSTOXX index removal, while order backlog hits €7 billion.

The gap between Renk's operational momentum and its stock price has rarely been wider. The defence gearbox specialist is posting record orders and unveiling its next-generation unmanned vehicle at a Paris trade show, yet the shares continue to slide under the weight of two unrelated but powerful headwinds: the removal from a key European index on 22 June and a weekend ceasefire deal with Iran that has soured sentiment across the entire defence sector.

The Iran framework agreement, announced on Sunday, triggered a broad sell-off in European defence stocks on Monday. Renk, whose drivetrains power military vehicles and naval vessels, was among the hardest hit. The stock fell roughly 4% to €45.24, taking its seven-day decline to 10.4% and year-to-date losses to around 18%. That leaves the shares just over 7% above a 52-week low of €42.12, a stark contrast to the October 2025 high of €88.73 from which they have nearly halved. Technical indicators reflect the strain: the relative strength index sits at 35.7, hovering just above oversold territory.

Compounding the geopolitical drag is a purely mechanical event. On 22 June, Renk will be removed from the iSTOXX Europe Centenary Select 30 Index. There are no fundamental reasons for the deletion, but the change forces index-tracking funds to sell the stock, adding artificial selling pressure. This technical exit comes on top of existing weakness: at Friday's close of €47.20, the stock was already trading roughly 19% below its 200-day moving average — a clear bearish signal.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?

Yet beneath the market noise, Renk's business continues to fire on all cylinders. First-quarter 2026 results showed record order intake of €582 million, up 6.1% year-on-year, while adjusted EBIT rose 10.4% to €42 million. The total order backlog has swelled to nearly €7 billion, providing exceptional long-term revenue visibility. Those numbers vindicate management's confidence, even as the stock price tells a different story.

At the Eurosatory 2026 exhibition in Paris, Renk and its partner Patria unveiled a concept for a next-generation unmanned ground vehicle. The company also introduced the new ESM-280 gearbox, marking a push into the wheeled armoured vehicle market — a segment that could unlock significant new demand beyond its traditional tracked-vehicle focus. The strategy is a clear signal that Renk is executing its growth plans regardless of geopolitical headlines or index mechanics.

For investors, the question is when the technical and sentiment headwinds will fade. The index-driven selling is expected to abate shortly after the 22 June removal, potentially allowing fundamentals to reassert themselves. The next major catalyst will be Renk's official half-year results on 6 August, when the company must back up its reaffirmed full-year guidance with fresh numbers. Until then, the stock remains caught between a record order book that signals strength and a market that is pricing in the opposite.
