While Renk Group executives used the Eurosatory defense trade show in Paris to showcase next-generation autonomous armor and a push into wheeled vehicle gearboxes, the company's shares were coming under fire from a very different set of forces. The stock slid more than 3% on Tuesday to €45.72, weighed down by a looming index removal, profit-taking across the defense sector, and a dividend ex-date that had already been priced in.

At the heart of Renk's trade show presence was a joint concept with Finland's Patria for a heavy unmanned ground vehicle built on Patria's modular TRACKX platform. The German gearbox specialist integrated its digital drive architecture around a new HSWL 076 transmission with drive-by-wire capability — a key enabler for remotely controlled and eventually fully autonomous armored systems. Separately, Renk debuted the ESM-280 gearbox, marking its first serious foray into the wheeled armored vehicle market, which until now had been dominated by tracked-vehicle drivetrains. CEO Alexander Sagel framed the push in terms of shifting NATO requirements, as member states look for ways to protect crews in high-intensity conflicts.

The trade show announcements did little to divert attention from three immediate pressures on the stock. Renk will be removed from the iSTOXX Europe Centenary Select 30 index on June 22, triggering forced selling by index-tracking funds. That technical adjustment coincides with a broader rotation out of defense stocks amid speculation over a potential de-escalation in the Iran conflict. Tuesday also marked the ex-dividend date for Renk's €0.58 per share payout, adding another layer of headwinds after last week's adjustment period.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?

The technical damage is evident. Renk shares now trade roughly 21% below their 200-day moving average, and the relative strength index has slipped to 36.6, suggesting an oversold condition. Over the past 12 months, the stock has shed about 35% of its value, though the decline since the start of 2024 stands at more than 14%.

None of that market pessimism is reflected in Renk's operational metrics. The company's order backlog has swelled to a record €6.9 billion, following first-quarter new orders of more than €582 million. Management has guided for 2026 revenue exceeding €1.5 billion and adjusted EBIT of between €255 million and €285 million. Crucially, more than 90% of that planned annual revenue is already secured under contract, providing a rare degree of visibility in the defense sector.

Investors will now look to August 6, when Renk publishes its official half-year results. The report will offer the first concrete evidence of whether the record order book is translating into earnings momentum strong enough to finally reverse the stock's downward trajectory. Once the index-related selling pressure abates later this month, the fundamentals should have a clearer shot at influencing the share price.
