Retail Workers Strike at Kieler Woche as Wage Talks Stall, Targeting IKEA and Festive Shoppers

As the 132nd Kieler Woche opened on Saturday, with the German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier and state premier Daniel Günther attending the official ceremonies, thousands of retail employees in Schleswig-Holstein downed tools. The union ver.di deliberately timed the walkouts to coincide with the nine-day festival, which organisers expect to draw more than three million visitors. Strikes hit the Kiel branches of IKEA and the CITTI market early on Saturday morning.
The escalation follows coordinated nationwide work stoppages on Friday that, according to ver.di, involved over 8,000 workers. The union has ramped up pressure in the retail and wholesale sectors, where wage negotiations are deadlocked. IKEA has become a central target: on Friday, strikers hit 31 of the furniture retailer’s outlets. ver.di accuses the company of planning to cut jobs despite posting a record turnover of more than €6 billion in 2024.
Other chains such as Kaufland, Primark, and H&M also faced disruption. In the Saarland, employers abruptly cancelled scheduled talks, leaving no immediate prospect of a deal there. Around 180,000 people work in retail across Schleswig-Holstein. IKEA described the impact on operations as minor; the union argues that the disruption is significant and that employers’ offers fall far short of what is needed.
The numbers illustrate the gulf between the two sides. ver.di is demanding a 7 percent wage increase, at least €225 more per month, for a 12-month contract period. Employers have offered 2 percent from November 2026 and a further 1.5 percent from August 2027, conditional on a two-year term. The union has rejected that proposal. The entire retail and wholesale sector generated €2.52 trillion in sales in 2025.
Negotiators are scheduled to meet again on 8 July for retail talks in Schleswig-Holstein and on 10 July for wholesale talks. Whether the Kieler Woche will see further walkouts depends, union sources said, on the willingness of employers to engage seriously in the coming days. The festival, which runs until 28 June, features sailors from 50 nations and 500 concerts across 20 stages. Steinmeier used his opening speech to highlight the unifying power of such large public events.
